Stuff like what?? As fans sure we wanted our player in day 1, but from the management side of things its a no-brainer that the 2nd year option is a very bad contract provision. I imagine Hurney has made MAJOR points with JR and even upped his overall status league wide on this one. He won this important contract battle and we have our guy in the fold and under contract. The GM's who agreed to the 2nd year options are the management guys who fucked up and should worry about there jobs....imho.

Stuff like cutting Key for no reason, ignoring the S position until the beginning of August, making Jason Baker the highest paid punter in football, adding virtually no free agents in the offseason despite having plenty of cap space, etc.

That's the key provision, because your opinion is wrong. Hurney acted like a child in saying that he wasn't sure if he'd talk to Beason's agent again, and there's no reason whatsoever that a compromise should have taken this long. Moreover, you're dramatically overstating the issue with option bonuses. Forfeiture is requested with far less than 1% of players, and even with Lelie the Broncos lost only $220,000 (and they only lost that because they chose to get rid of him).

Look, I'm no agent or GM, but isn't it obvious that I know a little something about this? I just find it bizarre that I've had to explain this ten thousand times already.

He paid more money to avoid the option bonus just being stubborn. He got punked. I don't see how you see him as the winner in the holdout.

Every fan of every team is going to take issue at moves made by "his/her" team. I could argue for or against any of those decisions. I personally think we would have been a better team with Key than without him, but to suggest we let him go "for no reason"...we obviously had a reason, management just did not share it. Just because we did "address" safety until Harris signed does not mean we "ignored" safety. Would you make a bad move just to make a move? We evaulated each opportunity and made a move when they deamed it was the right move. It's already been pointed out on this board that each time we passed on a safety in the draft it was argueably a good decision. As for our punter, he is a damn good one and fact is that a punters salary has a very minor impact on the overall team budget.

The point is that you suggested that he was an idiot for taking the position he did on 2nd year options and my point is simply that that particular move and the results go in the WIN category for Hurney in terms of GM smarts. Would you not agree?

BREAKING NEWS: Beason signs contract with Panthers
Deal is worth $12.5 million over five years, but no second-year option bonus
    Written by Steve Reed
    8/5/2007 10:05:52 AM

Jon Beason, the Carolina Panthers top pick in April’s NFL draft, signed a five-year deal on Sunday morning worth $12.5 million, according his agent Michael Huyghue.

The deal includes $6 million in guaranteed money and a $3.2 million bonus up front and another guaranteed bonus of $2.5 million bonus in 2009.

Beason arrived in Charlotte late Saturday night and will be at training camp for the team's next practice Monday morning.

“It was important for Jon to get in and we’re excited to have him,” Panthers general manager Marty Hurney said Sunday morning. “This week we start preparing for our preseason schedule. Jon has missed a week of installing our defense, but hopefully he gets in here and catches up to speed quickly.”

Hurney said Beason will spend extra time this week with linebackers coach Ken Flajole working to catch up.

“We hope to have him with some extra meeting time and get him up to speed quickly,” Hurney said. “We are just thrilled that the negotiations are over and that he’s coming to camp. Now we can focus on football.”

The sticking point was over the second-year option bonus.

The Panthers refused to give one and they never backed off that stance.

And in the end, the team got its way.

Huyghue wanted bonuses for his client in the first two seasons, but instead settled for bonuses in the first year and in 2009, instead of 2008.

In exchange, his client got more money in the first year of the contract than other players selected around his spot. Most late first-round picks received signing bonuses of less than $2 million.

“You never like to have a holdout but these are delicate matters,” Huyghue said. “The club didn’t want to do the second-year option bonus and it created a different structure and created more challenges. That’s why it took so long to get it done.”

Beason will also have a chance to reach escalators in 2009 and 2011 that could bump up his overall pay.

“That is the business part of professional football,” Huyghue said. “He’s past that now and now he’s focused on getting started playing football.” “

Sorry about the harsh words, Mr. Hurney.

Blind faith is cool in church, but I'm not crazy about it when it comes to sports teams. Generally I'd like to know or at least guess the reason for a team's decision-making, and yet no one has come up with a reasonable guess on Key.
Sure it does, although I tend to put that more on Fox than Hurney. There were vets available who didn't sign for a ton of money and we reportedly weren't even interested. This seems like one of those cases where Fox is trying to prove a point, and Hurney couldn't keep him in check because he's not a personnel guy.
He's solid, but I wouldn't describe him as better than that. Remember that Denver basically gave him away.
Of course he doesn't agree. Do you see any of the football junkies on here agreeing about that? The fact that none of them have should be a pretty big clue.

By the way, did anyone else notice that we're actually paying out more overall than we might possibly have lost if Beason inexplicably decided to retire, commit a crime, or holdout until traded? I guess some will still argue that this was just about setting a precedent for deals like Peppers' with huge money, but it still sure seems retarded.
