i had a Win98 machine.. I got nailed by spyware a couple years ago. I loaded spyware blaster on, to diable some setting that kept spyware from being loaded on the machine (I cant fucking remember). I also had Adaware and Spybot S&D, kill2me, etc.

Now i have an XP machine and I'm either going to get norton or the MS Onecare tonite (and remove the free McAfee that came with it). I"m going to put Adaware on it also. Anything else a new home XP user should worry about (like spyware blaster, etc).

    Thanks,

    1) AVG Free Antivrius
    2) Ad-Aware (Free version)
    3) Microsoft's OneCare or whatever they call it now. As long as it's free.

That should be all you ever need. All 3 are superb, free programs.

    1) MSFT OneCare (anti-virus and a lot more)
    2) MSFT Defender (antispyware)

No issues, and I like the interfaces.

Those plus I add Spybot S&D and use the Immunizing functions on it.

got both last night and I like (plus they're free, for now anyway).

Adaware tonite and should be set. Spybot has never thrilled me. I've checked for updates for the last year and there never are any.

Windows Media Center - any thoughts on that? It seemed to grab info off the net which I'm not thrilled with....I still need to set it up tho, I'm sure I can defeat that. And Yahoo jukebox? Since I have Mediaplayer/media center, and I'm going to load my MP3 Player software (Creative), seems like overkill to me.

    With spybot, you need to:
    >Go to Mode, and then switch it to Advanced Mode.
    >Next on the left hand side click Settings, and then Settings again in there.
    >To the bottom right scroll down until you see Web update
    >Click the check box next to Download updated include files if available online, Display available beta versions, and Display PGP signature updates.
    >Once youve done that go back to the left hand pane and above the Settings tab select Spybot-S&D
    >Now do a search for updates
    >If it finds any click the checkbox next to all the updates and download them
and then click the Download Updates button above.
    >After all are downloaded, find Immunize to the left hand side.
    >Click the Immunize button in that panel.
    >Then after it does it click Check again to make sure it says All Known Products Are Currently Blocked.
    >You're almost done now. In that same window, look below to make sure there is a check next to Enable permanent blocking of bad addresses in Internet Explorer, and make sure the drop down box is set to Block all bad pages silently.

This is used to prevent a lot of spyware problems. I can assure you this will be a very needed product. Adaware might remove spyware better than Spybot, but what good is it gonna do if it comes back. Spybot help to prevent it from returning and you want every defense you can get for that.

Trust me I've got to make sure better than 1,500 computers stay clean, I assure this will help.

For starters I wouldn't even load Yahoo Jukebox. As for Media Player I'd go get the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and then You can change Media Player security settings under options.

Thanks Brain. Yahoo Jukebox came with the computer, just haven't removed it yet. Removing McAfee was a pain in the ass.

What does this k-Lite codec thing do?

Basically it allows you to play damn near every video format. It also has a Real Player and Quicktime emulator that can replace both of those. I like to see the content, but I don't wanna install all the damned programs.
