Canes Offse guys happy so far? I'm glad they signed Ruutu, but they think they may have overpaid for Samsinov. (can't remember his numbers, but remember them seeming high)

The NHL's salary cap is on the rise again.
The league and the NHL Players' Association announced Thursday that each team will have a maximum of $56.7 million to spend for the 2008-09 season -- up $6.4 million from last season.
The minimum salary was set at $40.7 million for each of the 30 teams. The most money a player can earn in a new contract next season is $11.34 million a year.
In 2006-07, the salary cap was $44 million. Last year, it was $50.3 million.

I was listening to a guy on the radio yesterday talking about how the cap was a waste. I thought the guy was an idiot, because it means revenue is going up, but he brought up some good points. The mean is boosted by the six Canadian teams, wish I had the numbers, but it was shocking what a large percentage of the revenue comes from those teams. Teams like Nashville, Florida, and Tampa still aint shit.

Did anyone catch the interview with the new Tampa owners during the draft? They said they were going to be 'overly aggressive' during free agancy, saying if they had to over-pay 1 or 2 million to get the guy they want they would do it. Fucking idiots just got out of cap trouble by dealing Richards. I hope these idiots don't come in and fuck up the salary scale.

    Playa...WTF?

On the same day the Penguins learned they would have more money to spend this offseason, they discovered they still may not have enough to sign bruising defenseman Brooks Orpik.

Orpik, one of 12 Penguins players who will become unrestricted free agents on Tuesday, rejected a contract proposal from the Penguins on Thursday. The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reported that the deal was believed to have been a multi-year offer worth roughly $3 million annually, a large increase from the nearly $1.1 salary Orpik received last season.
Drafted 18th overall in 2000 by the Penguins, Orpik has made it known he would like to return to Pittsburgh, but the 6-foot-2, 219 -pound defenseman could garner upwards of $4 million a year in the open market.
Orpik's agent, Lewis Gross, spoke to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and acknowledged that Orpik had declined the Penguins' offer, but did not say whether he felt an agreement could be reached before Tuesday.
"We did receive an offer, which we turned down," Gross told the Post-Gazette. "But we're still talking."
Orpik's decision comes on the heels of Pittsburgh star forwards Ryan Malone and Marian Hossa stating their intent to test free agency as well. It is also expected that veterans Gary Roberts and Kris Beech will depart via free agency.
The NHL announced Tuesday that the salary cap for the 2008-09 season will rise to $56.7 million, a $6.7 million increase from the previous year and more than $17 million higher than the limit during the 2005-06 season that immediately followed the lockout that canceled an entire season.
Pittsburgh is expected to spend close to the limit with starting goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury qualifying for restricted free agency and centers Evgeni Malkin and Jordan Staal scheduled to become restricted free agents after the '08-09 season. The Toronto Star reported last week that Malkin had received a multi-year offer worth $12.5 million annually from a team from his native Russia.
Orpik finished with 11 points and was plus-11 with 57 penalty minutes in 78 regular season games last season. The U.S.-born defenseman had two assists in the playoffs and was minus-3 through four rounds. The Penguins lost to the Detroit Red Wings in the Stanley Cup finals after finishing with the league's second-worst record in '05-06.

you called it, although is this overpaid for him?

Tampa Bay has won the Ryan Malone lottery.

The Lightning and the unrestricted free agent agreed to a seven-year,
$31.5 million contract Sunday, ESPN.com has confirmed.

Tampa Bay dealt a third-round draft pick in 2009 for the short-term negotiating rights to Malone and Pittsburgh Penguins teammate Gary Roberts on Saturday. That allowed the Lightning to talk exclusively to Malone until the NHL's free agency signing period begins Tuesday.

The Penguins didn't feel they could afford to re-sign Malone, who had 27 goals and 24 assists last season. The Pittsburgh native was believed to be seeking about $5 million per season.

Malone has 87 goals and 82 assists in 299 career games, all with the Penguins.

In another move, Tampa Bay acquired the rights to forward Brian Rolston from the Minnesota Wild for a conditional draft pick.

Wild general manager Doug Risebrough said recently that if a deal wasn't reached by Tuesday, it likely would signal the end of Rolston's days in Minnesota.

Minnesota had been hoping to retain the 35-year-old Rolston for a few more years after getting 96 goals and 106 assists from him the past three seasons.

Rolston had been one of Minnesota's most consistent and reliable players, missing only five games during his first three seasons with the Wild.
Rolston, who hit the 30-goal mark three consecutive seasons for the Wild, sent text messages to Twin Cities newspapers earlier Sunday saying he was "going to the first of July." He did not elaborate, and it wasn't immediately clear Sunday night whether he still planned to become a free agent Tuesday or whether he would try to reach a deal with Tampa Bay.

That's cool for Malone. Lucky guy, playing with Crosby and Malkin as his centers, now lining up with Stamkos or Lecalvier. I really loved Malone this season, but every season before has just seemed so frustrating watching his inconsistency. The major thing he did this year was stepping up his physical game, but I don't know that he will ever see 30 goals. Seems like a lot to me because I don't think he will continue to improve, I think this may be the best year he ever has, but I dunno, is that the going rate for this type of player?

What were you saying about Orpik, too pricey?
