Niners get verbal from top center Martin Iti

Hey, this is big news to our program at least! He's ranked #3 on ESPN's top 100.

It's about time we get a big, quality center.

Charlotte lands Top 20 recruit Iti

By Dave Telep, TheInsidersHoops.com

Bobby Lutz is no stranger to talented kids. He's coached DeMarco Johnson, Jobey Thomas and Rodney White.

Now, the 49ers head coach has another big time talent coming into his program. Australian native Martin Iti cast his lot with the 49ers.

A few years ago, the 49ers had the ability to sneak up on people. Not anymore.

With guys like Vincent Grier, Brendan Plavich, Curtis Withers and Eddie Basden already in the program, the future looked bright for Charlotte. Last week, things started looking even better.

"I'm definitely going to commit to Charlotte," Martin Iti told TheInsidersHoops.com. "I'm going that route."

Iti debuted in our mid-summer Top 50 poll at No. 19. He's the highest-rated recruit of the Bobby Lutz era. He's loaded with potential. The 6-10, 235 pounder has a big-time wingspan. He's athletic, rejects shots and gets up and down the floor in a hurry.

"I took an unofficial visit and I liked the city," Iti said. "Everything fit into place and I liked it."

Iti entered the United States about four years ago. His path, which will eventually lead to Charlotte, has taken him from coast to coast. But, Iti says he always knew about Charlotte.

"I knew about Conference USA," he said. "I knew about Charlotte because they beat Louisville.

"That was a dream for me to play in college and get my education."

Playing time was a major factor in Iti's decision and Charlotte will have plenty of it for the athletic post player. Look for Martin at the ABCD Camp and also at the Big Time in Las Vegas, where he'll play with Pump 'n Run.

"verbal's" dont mean crap. Nice to see this though.

You're right Bear, anything could happen, but this is coming from a program that couldn't even sniff a recruit like this in the past much less get a verbal from one. I think this bodes well for the future of the program. :D

that's great stuff.

I do remember how big it was when we landed that Australian kid, though. And Ous Kane. And God knows how many centers since Price.

I know, I know. I am cautiously optimistic for sure.

No kidding, North Carolina's football team last year hand an ALL Star laiden verbally signed team until signing day and then a few peoples sack dried up and they went elsewhere. Cautiously optimistic

ITI NOT MOVING OFF HIS COMMMITMENT TO 49ERS

More than a week after committing to play for Charlotte, 6-foot-11 Martin Iti sill gets phone calls from other schools wondering how firm his commitment is.

"It's real firm," Iti said Wednesday from the adidas ABCD Camp.

That's not what Iti tells the coaches who call, though. He doesn't tell them anything. He doesn't answer the phone.

"Some of them leave messages, and some don't," said Iti, who will be a college freshman in 2003-04. "We have Caller ID, so we know who's calling."

Iti, an Australian native, has had an up-and-down week here - as do all centers, whose touches come at the whim of their point guards.

But he had one dominant stretch Wednesday against 6-10 Jackie Butler, who says he will enter the 2003 NBA draft.

In attendance for that game: Charlotte coach Bobby Lutz and assistant Kevin Nickelberry.
