With all the talk about how bad the drafts have been since Fox/Hurney I decided to go back and examine what really happened. I didn't want to do the whole we could have drafted player x who went 3 picks after we took Joe Blow. What I decided to do was look at who we drafted and then look through the draft and instead of taking the player we took- I looked at the very next person drafted at the position and the results were shocking and depressing...

    2002
    Panthers Selected
Peppers (2) vs. Dwight Freeney (11) Peppers probally More complete but either would have been an excellent choice.
Foster(34) vs. Clinton Portis (51) Portis was the better pick
Will Witherspoon (73) vs. Rocky Calmus (77)Spoon was the right pick but he's not helping us now....
Dante Wesley (100) vs. Brian Williams (105) Give me Brian Williams
Randy Fasani (137) vs. Kurt Kittner (158) Equally suck
Kyle Johnson (145) vs. Larry Ned (197) Great Pick up.....(for Denver)
Keith Heinrich (174) vs. Jeb Putzier (191) Putzier has 16 career starts and is currently a back up in Houston
Pete Campion (213) vs. Erik Heitman (239) Heitman is currently the Starting Center for San Fran

So if we can consider Peppers and Freeny equal that means we made the right decision only 2 times Spoon and Johnson and neither are still with the team.... Ouch

    2003
Jordan Gross (8) vs. George Foster (20) Started for Denver and is the starting RT for the Lions... Gross is better.
Bruce Nelson (50) vs. Austin King(133) They both were non factors King is a sup par back up with 1 career start but he was selected 83 fucking picks later
Mike Seidman (76) vs. Vishante Shiancoe (91). Shiancoe was the better pick currently 2nd TE in Minnesota and caught a 79 yarder this past weekend. Seidman had 158 career rec yards.
Manning Jr. (82) vs. Don Strickland(90).. Good Pick here
Colin Branch (119) vs. Terrance Holt (137) Holt by a mile-Starting Safety in Arizona.
Kindal Moorehead (145) vs. Matt Walters.. Moorehead is the pick but, neither are of any impact
Walter Young (226) vs. Talman Gardner -equally suck

We didn't miss out a whole lot with any of these pciks except for Holt. By this time next year we might not have 1 player on the roster from this draft though and that speaks volumes about it's effectiveness.

    2004
    C. Gamble (28) vs. Ricardo Colclough (38) Gamble was a really good pick.
    K. Colbert (62) vs. Benard Berrian (78).. I hope we can sign Berrian as our #2 WR in the offseason. Colbert is starting by default here and Berrian is a player
    T. Wharton (94) vs. Nat Dorsey (115) Dorsey is backing up Joe Thomas in Cleveland-Travelle Wharton would be too....
Drew Carter (163) vs. P.K. Sam (164) Carter has some promise-good value pick
Sean Tufts (196) vs. Charlie Anderson(194) Who cares
Michael Gaines (232) vs. Erik Jensen Who cares

    2005
The highlight here is Erik Shelton- next RB picked was Frank Gore,,,

I'll finish this later. I'm going to watch the Bobcats game...

Holy crap... If Carr has any shot of ever coming back, reuniting him with Berrian would be the way to do it. Carr to Berrian at Fresno State was like Jake to Smitty.

try looking at it from a positions drafted vs who was available at our pick to fill them perspective. It'll tell you more. Different teams have different needs.
