so I seek the advice of you techsters that know.

Whats a good brand? Memory need? Processing speed? Hard drive?

I ask only because last time I bought a laptop it was 2008 - it was a Dell and purchased during the great Vista debacle. So it has that going for it - that plus it has less memory than a dementia patient so it is agonizingly s l o w. It takes less time to kill it and bring it back up than it does to switch users.

My wife's only requirement is that it is fast. It will spend most of it's life on a desk hooked to a keyboard and monitor but the convenience and portability of a laptop is required.

I certainly don't want to break the bank. So in the $500 range what and where can I get something without wasting my money like I did three years ago.

    TIA

Why not upgrade to 7 and increase your memory?

well I guess I could What would that cost? It only has a meg of RAM. I would guess I should get at least 4.

Is it as easy to add memory to a laptop as it is a desktop?

Easier. The Windows 7 upgrade comes in a 3 pack for only $125. The memory you would have to research yourself using your Service Tag number at Dell. All told it would probably run you around $200.
