Lower level is correct...the signal is a dome-shaped signal (I only know this because a Cisco engineer told me).

I have been using a Linksys Access Point, Linksys one port router and a switch and had problems.

Switched the whole mess over to a Linksys Wireless G router (I have three computers wired and one wireless laptop) and it works fine. Did one for my daughter also and hers works fine. We never have dropage. Hers has a little more signal limitation because she's in an older ranch house. Mine gives me great signal on both floors and out on the deck.
I think I paid $69 before the rebates on the Wireless G's.

    Cisco owns Linksys now, BTW.

    Which doesn't mean shit.
On the wireless being a dome - most corporate environments put them in the ceiling - all depends how the antennas are setup. MIMO setups like the NetGear have 7 dynamic internal antennas (there is nothing external, it's just a flat box), and they can essentially have a full-circle config.

Yeah, I'm just saying that if he had Linksys that sucked, the next one might be better.

i have a netgear 108mbit that had that same problem -- if i didn't use it for a while, i'd have to reset the connection. finally decided to switch channels. unfortunately, only 1 channel supports the dual speed (108 instead of 54) so i'm stuck at lower speeds. in truth, tho, i really just get about 18 or so. but at least on this other channel, it's a more stable connection.

Wireless solution for under $100....Linksys fits the bill and is backed up by Cisco's service. Everybody wants to bash Linksys, but IMHO, Linksys is good stuff for the non-corporate user. I don't play an IT professional on TV....I am one.

Bootay is right, you can orient the antennae to create numerous signal configurations, but with most access points, straight up and down creates something of a dome. Possibly keeping this in mind, try to orient your antannae differently.
