kinda same with DW. Stewart turned on the TDs and will keep that up, but Williams was a guy I could pick up later on in every league and still get rewarded.

I don't know I envisioned Moose being on pace for an 1150 yard, 7 TD year. Really taking some targets away from the TEs, which is more than fine.

Moose is what is he is. He isn't going to get more than 1000 yards this season, but he'll get his usual 850. The guy isn't and never was an elite receiver, so not paying him elite money was the right move. Where they messed up was not signing him to a cost-effective extension in 2003 when I was harping on that. If you let a guy get to the final year of his contract and he has a monster season because of luck or whatever, you're going to end up paying out the ass or just losing that player.

Peter King makes an interesting comparison in MMQB today (scroll to the bottom):

Will Moose be a HOF candidate? Hard to see that, barring some late-career dramatics (SB MVP a couple times or something). But their numbers are strikingly similar.

I think that says more about why Monk didn't deserve to get in.

no. The second half of his career here, he'd not been the better WR on the field. To say Muhammad is HOF worthy would mean Smitty is a first-ballot sure thing if not for attitude, and I wouldn't put Smith in the hall without continual domination.

He'd need to have gained more balls in Chicago, not less, to have the numbers to stay competitive, and players get a lot more balls now than they did, so it's hard to statistically relate. The TDs aren't there if the receptions and yards were. If his years looked like 99 and 00, or 04, for about 6-7 more years, I'd put him there.

FWIW, I think Monk got by on reputation to a point, I don't feel like he was a sure-thing HOF candidate. Both are football players playing WR, though, and the comparison is accurate.

I'd also say Muhammad is, for a WR, a devastating blocker on cutbacks and a very effective drive blocker against DBs. He even pass blocked a LB this week and looked competent. I'd say he's more than willing, he's a textbook example.

I don't think he should go to the HOF unless he has a couple more seasons like 2000 or 2004. He basically single-handedly won a fantasy league for me in 2004 with his 1400 yards and 16 TDs. I got a lot of comments when I drafted him in the 14th round or something too.

I'd love to seem him reach 900 catches and 12000 yards before he retires. 2 great seasons or 3 good seasons would do it.

He's not close to being a HOF. Anyone with a long career in this passing era is going to be up on the career passing or recieving statistical list.

Are Jimmy Smith and Keenan McCardell HOFers? They are currently 9th and 10th on the all time receptions list. But the only way they get into the hall is if they buy an admission ticket.

I get what you're saying, but I happen to think that Jimmy Smith was one of the most underrated receivers of all-time and I could support his candidacy. Unlike McCardell, he was extremely consistent in his production and while never truly elite, he played at a higher level than someone like Monk. The lack of TDs is what keeps him out of the discussion.

Good points, magnus and piper re: the different eras affecting the numbers.
