But they seem to be minor ones (said with my fingers crossed!):

    Foxhole: Business as usual

Comments from Carolina Panthers Head Coach John Fox following the team's practice.

On injuries: Brad Hoover (back) and Mike Minter (knee) did not practice today. Everybody else is questionable. Chris Gamble is probable.

On the status of linebacker Dan Morgan: We're just taking it one day at a time. We'll have contact tomorrow and we anticipate him playing, but he's listed as questionable.

On the seriousness of fullback Brad Hoover's and safety Mike Minter's injuries: Both of them are listed as questionable. Neither one of them is doubtful. We'll see how they feel tomorrow and go day-to-day, but we anticipate that they'll play Sunday.

On the value of fullback Brad Hoover: Brad's been very dependable. We were more or less just giving him a break, letting him heal up a little bit and getting him ready to play on Sunday.

On if it is still business as usual despite being 1-7: We're at the end of the first half and we're 1-7. That's not going away. It's there. We're just taking it one game at a time, trying to win every time we go out. So I guess that part of it is business as usual.

On people saying that the Panthers are the worst team in the League based on their 1-7 record: Everybody has got their own opinion. We're trying to get better and trying to find a way to win. Lord knows we've been close but we haven't been able to get over the top and we've got eight games yet to do that. We're only halfway through the game and halfway through the race, and I'll hold my evaluation until after the race is over.

It is what it is. That's what reality is. We've got eight games left. We've played eight. We're going to try to do the best we can to change the fortunes in the second eight.

On the San Francisco 49ers: Their season has gone about like ours has gone. They've had some injuries. Their quarterback (Tim Rattay) has been a little nicked up. But he's played well and when he's been in there, they've been a much better team. Defensively, I think they lost one of their star outside linebackers. But they're playing pretty salty, and it will be a tough test for us.

On the explosiveness of the 49ers offense: They're very capable. The margin between victories and losses in this League is very minimal. They've been in a lot of games and have been ahead in a lot of games. Again, it's going to be another stiff test. There are no easy ones, and we're playing at their place.

On undrafted rookie free agent Jordan Carstens: Jordan has just continued to improve. He's a guy that, coming out of camp, we thought enough of to keep around on our practice squad. We've had some injury situations, and he's stepped in. So far, he's grabbed the bull by the horns as far as the opportunity. He continues to improve.

On if the amount of playing some of the Panthers younger players are getting because of injuries is a blessing in disguise: Yes. All a guy can ask for is opportunity, and we've got some guys that had we not had injuries probably wouldn't have those opportunities. I think that helps us for the future.

I don't even know why I bother reading Fox's press statements. "It is what it is."

    What It Is, is desperation.
They are scraping the bottom of the barrel just trying to field a damn team. San Fran going to be a tough test..........
yes it is; tough trying to play in the nfl with your 3rd string and practice squad.
Why don't they just admit, its hard to win when your OL sucks and you can't scheme a defense to cover the tight end. I guess that can't practice covering the TE because we don't have any plays to throw to the TE.

In another blow to the Panthers' running game, Davis' primary backup, rookie Joey Harris, pulled a hamstring in practice Friday and also is questionable for the game.

Davis ran for a career-high 1,444 yards in 2003, but has carried just 24 times for 92 yards this season.

Panthers head coach John Fox wouldn't say Friday who will start if Harris doesn't play, but fullbacks Brad Hoover and Nick Goings probably will split the load.

Hoover missed practice Wednesday and Thursday with a back injury, but was upgraded to probable Friday. He is second on the team with 219 yards on 56 carries.

The Panthers (1-7) also have Brandon Bennett, who was signed three weeks ago, but he has not carried the ball this season.

Panthers' Harris questionable with hamstring pull

    By Darin Gantt The Herald
    (Published November 13‚ 2004)

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers search for healthy bodies at running back took another hit Friday.
Rookie Joey Harris, the fourth tailback of the season (not counting converted fullbacks) suffered a pulled hamstring near the end of practice and was listed as questionable for Sunday's game at San Francisco.

The Panthers have already placed DeShaun Foster and Rod Smart on injured reserve, and Stephen Davis was downgraded from questionable to out Friday on the injury report submitted to the league. Davis practiced briefly Wednesday but not at all on Thursday or Friday.

Team officials originally said they thought Davis would travel this weekend, but that may not happen now. He hasn't played since aggravating his chronic right knee problem on Oct. 17.

Harris' injury -- a cruel and unusual blow -- leaves the Panthers with midseason pickup Brandon Bennett as the only true running back on the roster.

The Panthers have given carries to fullback Brad Hoover and Nick Goings as well this year. Hoover was upgraded to probable Friday after missing practice Wednesday and Thursday with a sore back.

For the record, Foster remains the team's leading rusher this season with 255 yards.

    • EXTRA POINTS: In addition to Hoover, much of the rest of the Panthers' injury report was upgraded Friday. Defensive tackle Kindal Moorehead (shoulder), linebacker Dan Morgan (concussion) and safety Mike Minter (knee) were each listed as probable after practice. All four had spent the week listed as questionable.

Cornerback Artrell Hawkins (hamstring) remains questionable.
