that's a lot to put on a guy that isn't that consistent. Cam will get better but putting everything on a sophomore is a great way to have him fail.

And sure, some of the best teams are offensive-driven, defensively terrible teams. I wouldn't expect that to continue, and if you're not willing to adapt, you can fail all that much faster. It's not a valid way to compete long term, and if you think those teams are going to not improve their defenses, you're crazy.

fair enough. Just dont know how many different offenses can be expected to score like Brees, though the recent trends in rules changes increases those chances for sure. It's certainly not a pipe dream to think Cam could lead an elite offense.

Speaking of the RB's, could we possibly extend Stewart given our cap situation? Because if not, we should seriously consider trading him for something this offseason before he goes into the last year of this deal. We let Peppers walk for nothing, cant afford to let Stewart do the same.

I see your point. The league is very cyclical: whatever is successful today will likely be much less successful tomorrow once teams have enough time to adjust. But, the rules changes cannot be ignored. The safety position is nearly impossible to play these days given the new emphasis on player safety.

I remember when Parcells lamented the fact he had chosen Terrence Newman so highly because of the new rules and how they were enforced and that was quite a few years ago. Nonetheless, this attitude may be even more applicable today. The Packers have a really talented set of corners, doesnt seem to do them much good, though its hard to know if that's because of a lack of pass rush or the difficulty in covering receivers within the rules of the game. The Giants, on the other hand, have sunk most of their defensive resources into the DLine. Luckily, these teams play each other this weekend, so we get to observe the merits of each philosophy.

The thing is, they built their offenses first around their qb. It is a given Cam must progress for that to happen. To better help him I believe it's imparative we improve the O line and possibly get him another vertical threat if possible. Once we're where we need to be then build the defense. I agree that long term we need both but if we can build the offense and Cam progresses we can better prepare our D. If we can score a lot then you get playmakers on D that can create turnovers while our opponants try to catch up.

Didn`t we see last year what a good offense and a shitty defense will get you? If they don`t go defense 5 out of 7 picks then something is wrong.

The correct answer for Rd1 is Devon Still, DT Penn St.

i think there is some merit to this argument since the game has changed. yes you can still win with the old conservative formulas but the rules are designed now to favor the high-scoring offenses (which i personally don't really like ... loved and miss the old-school smash-mouth football). so it would seem to me that Ted could be right to a point (don't agree with KR, etc being priority over defense).

you have to be able slow the other team's offense at least some, which means that you have to be able to stop the run some because if they can run on you like Atlanta did to us you ain't gonna stop them at all. we have to get better in the interior D. Beason will help a lot and maybe with Edwards and development of the other DTs will be enough that we don't need more. kinda dicey but i could see us standing pat for another year.

once you can keep teams from running you have a chance. if you have a high-powered offense then once you are up and the other team starts pressing and passing a lot, you want to be able to get after their QB. so i think a speedy D with a great pass rush becomes important. i think we have the speed at LB if Davis can return, so my priority I think would be a pass rushing DT (I like Hardy at lot better than Collin so I think our DEs are adequate), or maybe that pass-rushing LB Mags is pitching or a ball-hawk DB.

but as Ted says, WR would be more of a priority at this time. (i'm a bit iffy on OL, we need a better RG but Schwartz could be the guy). I like FA for WR. I would draft a guard with #1 in a heartbeat if he's a Munchak type of player; but honestly you should be able to get a really good guard in the second and can find quality guards lower in the draft. I can't see OT being drafted at this time. so .... hopefully we can get a great player on D with that first pick (and maybe #2 pick too) and pick up a stud WR in FA. if so, SB here we come!!

oh, and absolutely must keep Shockey. (actually, that would be my number 1 priority)

Do you prefer Kirkpatrick or do you just want a corner? I liked what I read about him, but when I started watching Alabama I stopped liking him.

Still is garbage. I've watched him play and I wouldn't spend a second round pick on that guy. If you just want to go DT, fine, but choose someone else.

Devon Still is not all that, he's def not a top 10 pick. We go DE or CB with out 1st pick.
