IMO the defense is too hosed to try reaching for defensive talent in the first round. If there's a offensive playmaker you take him. The offense is much closer to making the team competitive. Same with FA. We have limited cap space, why waste it slightly improving a poor defense if you can add a contributor to build an elite offense. If you look at the top teams that's what's trending now. The top priority now should be shoring up the o line and finding a playmaker if you can at WR. Next should be a kick returner, kicker and punter. Then start worrying about the defense.

I think the defense will be a lot better next year, and it's not simply due to the injured guys coming back. Many times when a football team has a regime change, you see the biggest jump between years 1 & 2.

I didn't say he wasn't legitimate, but he's both the most experienced and most able inside rusher if he's here.

    wow...what

OK so either way, both Claiborne and Kirkpatrick are in, as of tonight. Prefer Kirkpatrick to all this other nonsense, including Coples, but again I don't know if Coples' effort issues don't drop him anyway.

Quite simply, we are far few pieces away from having an elite offense than even a respectable defense. Why not draft and use FA to compete now with the QB we just picked #1? Finish what we started on one side of the ball.

I can understand picking a needed but much higher rated offensive player at 8/9, but the idea of ignoring the defense completely, or putting it behind six other things, I don't know. At the very least you try to do the Colts thing and build as if you'll always have a lead, or strategize run stopping so you can force situationality in passing, but you never go for simple neglect. There's no rock bottom with defense, if you plan on starting a Jordan Senn and Terrell McClain duo you could give up 800 yards rushing a game, creating all-time lows in team demoralization and shame.

If you score like Drew Brees the run is a moot point. If their defense had to hold a lead or win a lot of games with an average offense they'd look as bad as our defense. Green Bay and NE have terrible defenses this year. Id rather bitch about how bad our defense is while we were in the playoffs than remark about how well they are doing on the outside looking in.

If if's were fifth's, we'd all be drunk. Dont know if Cam will ever be as efficient as Brees, but he will likely never be as accurate. We got to work with what we have as opposed to strive for what we do not. We're truly in uncharted territory trying to build an offense around Cam. All I know is he makes 3rd downs soooooo much easier to convert. And since the football teams I really support are the Panthers and Tar Heels, I'm not used to offensively driven teams like we have and will have going forward with Cam, but I like it...if only for novelty's sake. Being able to own the football on offense, preventing the other team's offense from taking the field, is a good feeling, one I would like to continue.

I said score like Brees. We also have 2 good RBs that could do with some better OL play. If Cam can progress and we can dominate the line of scrimmage it's not a pipe dream to think this could be an elite offense. I realize mine is an alternate viewpoint, but it is a valid way to compete in today's NFL.
