Panthers' Minter leaves field with knee wrapped in ice
    August 4, 2005

    AP - Aug 1, 3:26 pm EDT

SPARTANBURG, S.C. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers free safety Mike Minter was taken off the practice field with his left knee wrapped heavily in ice following Thursday afternoon's practice.

Panthers head coach John Fox said Minter sprained his knee, but said the extent of the injury will not be known until later, possibly Friday.

Team officials said trainers were going to treat the knee and determine if Minter will need an MRI.

The injury occurred during live goal line drills late in Thursday's second practice session.

Considered the emotional leader of the Panthers' defense, Minter has started more games on defense (109) than any player in team history. This offseason, he received a four-year contract extension from the Panthers.

Minter is the midst of moving from strong safety, where he has played the majority of his career, to free safety. The change is designed to accommodate first-round draft pick Thomas Davis, who is likely to end up starting at strong safety.

Minter, who has missed only two games in the past six seasons, had 94 tackles, two fumble recoveries and two sacks last year.

A sprain would leave him out between 2-4 weeks, and would probably play in the final preseason game.

Thanks Magnus! I was wondering. Let's hope it's just a sprain.

Bashir will certainly be at FS, probably fighting McCree. I could see them keeping Branch/Davis at SS, since both are learning.

It surprises me that the had Branch starting at SS. Wasn't one of the problems last year w/ Branch his tackling ability?

i didn't think so until that last game against the saints. there were times i thought he looked very aggressive and tuff on the tackle.

think the early complaint was that he never showed up for run support ... but i think that was due mostly to what the coaches were telling him to do, which was to stay soft and don't get bit by a run fake
