It's really not common, at least on a week-to-week basis. The U.S. Amateur Champion gets to play in the Masters, U.S. Open, and the British Open, as well as an occasional sponser's invite.

It's a reward for winning the U.S. Amateur.

As a sidebar, Wie has qualified for the amateur Public Links tourney, in which the winner also gets a Masters invite. So that should certainly be interesting to follow.

It seems you should be taking issue a lot more with the sponsor, not the girl. It's their exemption that put her there.

That's really what I've been saying. I don't blame her for taking the spot, but the sponsor is adding an uncompetitive player, an amateur, who is keeping a Tour vet who NEEDS the spot from playing.

In the grand scheme of things, this one is not a big deal. But the developing idea that LPGA pros (and a 15-year-old amateur) can compete on the level of PGA Tour pros is bordering on the absurd. Annika Sorenstam, who is probably the best female to ever play, couldn't sniff the cut in her PGA event. Suzy Whaley, who won her way into the Hartford Open, couldn't come close to par. Wie is battling to make the cut against a watered-down field and an easy golf course.

She probably has the best chance to change golf for women over the next 20 years. But, IMO, she is handicapping herself by neglecting the challenges of the junior girls, and eventually the women's professional level.
