    I don't think a DC creates a Bob Sanders.

I think he overachieved with a lot of spare parts. It obviously helped having a great pass rusher like Freeney, and Manning's clock control offense, but his defenses have played well even when neither was as effective. I think we could have done worse.

I don't see us suddenly being a hang-back, c2 defense. I think it will be the same Fox scheme, maybe a few new elements.

He's a good coach, and spent 7 years under Dungy.

His units were always active. They dipped in 2006 (rushing yards allowed), but remember, they picked it up in the playoffs and shut it down.

He'll work peacefully with Fox. No ego issues, as you may have run into with Haslett/Edwards.

FWIW, Chris Harris plays a lot like Bob Sanders. The difference is in height in weight. Otherwise, it's almost the same player in two different bodies.

    Or a Dwight Freeney.

The talent level isn't going to magically spring to life, no. Using them right is always a good sign, though.

Is it a good hire, though? I believe it's quality, and if you were to say "hey, we need to fix __________", he's a good guy to have. He's interviewed for numerous jobs, and while never landing one keeps that from being a huge positive, he's at least thought of.

Edwards may still be in play, FWIW. Their ideals are compatible.

did we sign a coach or players? or both, I'm confused... When did Bob Sanders become a free agent? Or did we give up draft picks?

No, but schemes he employs allows players to reach (or not reach) their potential. If the DC doesn't have a hand in a player's effectiveness, Julius Peppers' argument of why he needs to move on from Carolina is frivilous.
