If I was a Panthers fan, I would be happy that CJ and DW were back in the sense that they are talented, but would've been unhappy when I saw the numbers, and even more unhappy when I saw the numbers other teams signed players for. Not to mention that he jumped the gun and rushed to sign him, when there will still be a lot of Vets that are going to be cut and could be a stopgap. Though keeping talent is part of a GMs job, so is signing them early if talent is identified, and letting them walk if they get too expensive. It might be sleazy, but if DW was on the Pats or Eagles, they would've signed him right after his injury when they held the upper hand, not right before he's about to hit the open market. Poor management tends to result in poor results on the field.

Take a look at another team in the NFC South, TB and how their strategy for rebuilding took shape in contrast with the Panthers. They cut almost everything, only keeping young unproven talent, and look how fast they bounced back. Losing guys that very well could produce elsewhere and even be superstars is tough, but is often the right move. It might take a few years, but guys step up, and become the next DW or CJ. Panthers wouldn't likely make the playoffs this year even with the wonderful 2-14 core, so why not recycle the team and start with flexibility, cheap contracts, and 1-2 year veteran deals to fill holes? Sign the YOUTH to long term deals they might regret in 2 years, but don't overpay for the guys that could be on the downside.

"mechanic" is not an accurate title for a guy who has only been paid to do oil changes and lube jobs
