Well, it was JR who took the flak for being cheap for the last two years. Now it's JR getting the credit for the spending spree.

Maybe because I'm not completely ignorant as to the way the NFL works. Dude, the only owners who are intimately involved in who the team signs and for how much are the ones like Jerry Jones, Mike Brown, and Al Davis who also serve as their team's general manager. Jerry Richardson does have to sign off on contracts, but he doesn't negotiate them or decide who the team should go after. Anyone who thinks that knows absolutely nothing about professional sports in the United States.

Isn't this exactly what I said? The rest of your shit is chest pounding. You lay sole blame on Hurney when JR obviously approves.

Since this started with Johnson, is Johnson more or less than 75% of the player Jared Allen is?

I really feel JR has a bigger finger in the pie than you are willing to admit. To me that became evident in the last two years. The cutting of all the dead money and drafting Armanti Edwards. The Edwards thing to me was to appeal to a broad base of App. State fans in the area. Why else would a rookie have his jersey for sale prior to training camp. JR is an old school kinda of guy who runs his business the way he see fit.

    QB

How can anyone argue agianst this? I am furious about Hurney's overspending, and most fans think he is doing a wonderful job. Do you think Beason's agent would have asked to make his client the highest paid MLB ever? He has not performed at that level. Love him, but damn. The two teams fighting us for CJ didn't have the cap room. CJ could not believe the deal he got. Crazy money. I see $11 million per--maybe. But the biggest joke deal was DW's. He is hitting the wall now. He may have 2-3 seasons in him. He will always split time/carries. We have 3 RBs in the garage who can bring it. Hurney gave him $2-3 million per season more than he is worth--$8 million more than I would have given him.

I suppose the core is important, but when do you upgrade. We were 2-14! Do we have a stud DT? CB? Do we have a veteran QB who can play this game? Hurney just caused league-wide inflation.

There is a difference between aggressive and stupid. :REGamblMoney01HL2:

There's no doubt that Richardson had a lot to do with this offseason, or the last one. Guy dropped his kids for not doing what he wanted. But, it's easier to say that Hurney makes all the decisions by himself because he can be let go (which won't happen anytime soon).

We got stuck behind the 30% rule and the CBA, and then went out to spend when they could get by it. Did they spend too much? In many places yes, and not unexpectedly. CJ's deal specifically, I figured would be about where it is. I expected them to overspend, on their own guys, but the biggest contracts didn't bother me that much, I anticipated them coming. That some deals behind it were more favorable is the more interesting part, but again, that's living in retrospect on players that we didn't have investments into.

Beason's agent wouldn't ask for a league leading contract? Why wouldn't he? He signed the same deal as Willis (with $1 mil more guaranteed overall, a full year later), and the pair have been among the top middle linebackers since they entered the league together. His agent is Drew Rosenhaus, did you think Rosenhaus wouldn't be up on contract values?

Same for CJ, same agent. CJ might have been naive about the process and it's easy to pick on a few words he said, but Carolina, and DR, both knew his value. That Edwards got caught with a bad agent, maybe so. Will that contract be acceptable, if he's as good as Johnson? Maybe, maybe not.

While I agree Hurney has overspent, and I'm embarrassed about it as a Panthers fan, to hear someone say D-Will is up against the wall and has 2-3 years left in him makes my head turn upside down.

    No way.

He got injured, and his biggest knock to me is, he gets dinged too much. But thats his body, not that he's an old back.

He has young legs, and at least 5-7 strong seasons left if he wanted them. 1000+ yards.

D-Will is also arguably, our best offensive player.

He's missed 14 games the last two seasons. He's 28. 5-7 seasons left? Who was the leagues leading rusher last year? Oh yeah, an UFA. They paid too much, plain and simple.

So because you expected it, it doesn't bother you? I would think when a team overpays, especially if you feel it coming, it would bother you more. Seeing the rest of the NFLs contracts and how much more affordable they have been would seem to throw more salt into the wound.

Whats worse, overspending on quality guys, or being cheap and losing them over a couple million....
