I'd call that a nice insurance policy for Millen of Marenelli fails. If I am Marenelli I am not 100% sure I want this guy lookking over my shoulder. I assume if I was worthy of being a NFL head coach I wouldnt look at it that way though since I assume it requires a pretty large ego.

I agree he needs to be rained in on the running part and was thrilled he wasnt in line for the Chiefs job personaly.

Back in 2004 in a game against the Falcons, Bulger was hit in his own end zone as he was about to throw. The ball went straight into the air and was snagged by the Falcons D Lineman for a fumble recovery touchdown.
Martz challenged the play saying that Bulgers arm was going forward. . . but the refs refused to allow the challenge b/c THE BALL WAS CAUGHT IN MIDAIR. If it was overturned it would have been an interception TD instead of a fumble recovery TD.

Funny you bring up Ryan, I recently called Martz the offensive version of Ryan. Similar standoffish personalities and arrogance for sure.

Funny. He also challenged the spot of the ball to move it a couple of yards when no 1st down was involved.

If he has a HC to manage the game, to fight, or not fight with the front office, and to tell him to call some run plays, to tell him not to take the FG when he could most likely win a playoff game by trying for a TD, and to tell him he's letting his QB get too beat up from time to time, he'll be great. Besides all that, apparently Marenelli (can't remember his exact name) seems to be a charismatic guy. Maybe he thinks he will be fun to work for. Plus the Lions do have some talent. Some holes too, but some talent. Its been mismanaged.

Can Martz's ego handle not being the head guy?

Good question, but he'll get enough genius hype that it should make up for it.

I agree with magnus that Martz is too qualified to be an OC. People who complained about him never really gave it much thought, considering that he ran more than Andy Reid. If the Lions luck into him, it will only be for one season. Personally I think he'll just sit out a year.

The Lions are saying something like they haven't talked to him. Teams lie all the time, but usually not in this circumstance. I wonder if this is publicity by Martz because he hasnt draw that much interest. He probably withdrew from the Oakland race when it was clear he had no chance anyway.

Martz has previously said that he would not even consider being an OC this year, and one of the reasons he withdrew from Oakland is that Davis wanted him to be an OC. Therefore I was shocked to hear that Detroit might get him to do that, and it sounds more and more like a concoction of the media.
