A quick stroke of the pen and we gain almost 4 million in space. Williams has 5 million of his 2012 salary quaranteed and counting against the 3012 cap. rewrite it to signing bonus and voila, all the room we need for draft picks.

I looked at this stuff about a week ago so I'm going from memory.

8 & 9 slots paid about 12.5 mil last year. 4 year contract.

In contrast, I think 8, the year before, was a 40 mil 5 year deal. 9 was 5/25.

yeah that part has to help us still, with the draft picks.

Upside is, internally all the FAs are depth, including Shockey. But we do have a lot of need for depth. And certainly a few starters. The contracts we would cut, in most cases, would have to come with a veteran signing, there aren't enough impact picks coming up to be relied upon.

Problem with Smith is that agents always want bonus money over salary, although that could be mitigated if the Panthers agree to guarantee a hefty portion of those salaries.

And congratulations yet again to Hurney for completely fucking up the Thomas Davis situation. I said at the time that Yasinskas and the local idiots were wrong when they suggested that Carolina could get out of the deal easily if they wanted to cut Davis after one season. As you note, he'd count $5.6 mil against the 2012 cap if the Panthers cut him. Fortunately Davis sounds like he's willing to be nice and cover up for Hurney being an idiot by restructuring that contract to get rid of the option bonus. At least I hope that's what happens. We're still paying a shitload of money ($3.6 million next season & more in the future) for a guy with a thrice blown ACL when there was no need to extend him in the first place.

Godfrey's extension also makes me want to throw up. Good work, though, magnus.

I can see the money to some guys, but Godfrey earned nothing. In his case, another year to play it out, see how he does in the new defense, makes a lot of sense. Charles Johnson might not might not be too valuable to let walk, Jon Beason is too valuable. Charles Godfrey is a random guy.

I need to see what it'll cost to tender RFAs. I have some worry that having to cut a Wharton would be used up completely in just RFAs, but at least you get Schwartz back, who I certainly like.

Very good read, but also very depressing. I blame Fox for the Godfrey contract. He always sold him as being more than he was.
