The NFL has granted the Lions $11.75 million in salary-cap credit to spend this offseason because defensive tackle Shaun Rogers did not play enough last season to trigger a lucrative incentive in his contract, NFL.com reported Friday.

    Our View
This is major news for the Lions, who had not anticipated receiving the credit and now have an extra $12 million to spend in free agency. Although team officials have said Joey Harrington will remain with the team, the Lions are expected to upgrade their quarterback position and now have the financial resources to lure Drew Brees or another top free agent to Detroit.

I assume it had already been levied against their cap as a "reachable incentive," although I'd be interested to know the particulars. It's not as if they received money no one else did, it's just money they're getting back. Think of it as an NFL tax refund.

I have a hard time accepting that any $11 million incentive would be considered likely-to-be reached. But in no terms would it not be legit.

Maybe we could recoup some of Morgans contract money by expecting him to be on the field > 50% of the time :bananalam

Am I the only one who thinks Matt Millen will find a way to f**k up nearly $12 million in cap space? Or at least f**k up with who he spends $12 million on?
