i don't know a lot about laptops, but does anyone have one? my mom wants to get one and i'd be the one shopping for it. i've heard dell is solid. what's a good price? i've got a lot of research to do -- know of a good place to start?

Dell does have good laptops. Our company issued me an Inspiron 7500. Their online ordering setup lets you customize.

And contrary to what Y2 thinks, there are other brands of computers in this world of ours that work just fine even if you are an idiot.:p

We've got them starting around 1100. Compaqs and HP's. We'll let you do custom configs just like Dell, but with less quirky machines. www.staples.com

Compaq laptops have a problem at their AC connection... because of that they frequently burn up there and fuck up the mother board... if they'd fix that I'd recommend them right up there with Dell, but until they do the Compaq laptop is off my list... though they do make a decent Desktop

Larry Dell is the best laptop on the market though... a tip I would give though... shell out a few extra dollars with whatever laptop you buy and get the DVD Drive... the reason I say this... go price a portable DVD Player... if you're buying a laptop anyways get it thrown in and you'll have something to occupy the youngins on road trips.

Well, Dell in general is a littlw quirky. They're not as bad as Gateway or as bad as compaq used to be. They like to make it difficult to upgrade without using more dell things.
Compaq has a little of that left in them, but I imagine now that HP has taken over production that'll work its way out.

As far as the DVD thing goes, I agree with Brain on all but one thing. They're definatly great, but don't expect to pay any extra for them... dvd-rom drives are all but standard on laptops now.

why the laptop?
my first real computer was a lap. turns out I ended up using it a good deal in the same spots, and could have easily settled for a desktop. When I got into a desktop I've been just as happy without the laptop inconveniences.
