    A knowledgable "know-it-all" is better than a clueless "know-it-all".
Have you ever listened to Irvin on his weekly call ins to the Dan Patrick Show? He ROCKS.
I can't say that I always agree with him, but the opinions he gives are backed with fact and add merit.
For the record, I detest the Cowboys. I hated Irvin as a player.
Tharan000? In case you haven't noticed, Gumbel and Irvin are both black.
Leave your racism comments in the trash where they belong.
    Stereotypes are for junk.

How do you know I'm not black? So you are saying that because I am a black man that I belong in the trash? Oh well, now the truth REALLY comes out...

BTW, Gumbel is whiter than my Irish mother.

Never said or insinuated that you were or were not black. Go back and read again.
I said that Irvin and Gumbel were both black.
Just because my side of the fence or location of the fence is white doesn't make me racist. Just because your side of the fence is black doesn't make you beyone reproach.
Just because you ARE a black man doesn't make you immune or exempt from having your opinions labeled as racist. That is a two way street.
For the record, Gumbel was hell on wheels as a reporter for NFL Today when he was young, 25 years ago. That is when He, Brent Musburger and Phyllis George were there, back in the day.
And, OH YEAH, for the RECORD, to assume anyone is racist or a certain way of opinion or action, just because of where they are from, IS RACIST. Look up the definition.
Screw this NFL board. You don't want to talk or exchange. You want to dictate and/or label if someone disagrees with you!

In poker, If you have four aces, they are of different suits, different colors and they all have a white backing.
It takes all to make one.
By the way, my ENTIRE IRISH family fought for the Union during the Civil War including my GG grandfather who was beaten and starved to death by the Confederates.
I could go into a rant about how different cultures have been treated in this country, but I am sure you already know that.
Don't tell me about how people are or have been treated.
Your pity party is nothing more than self-absorbed bullshit.

Gumble is an articulate racist...but I think people are viewing this a little too personally when your only being :imagestor .
His politics aside, yes, Gumble COULD be good...but his politics is what has made his career successful. I wouldn't expect him to abandon it now, although, HBO does give him that freedom where NFL Network likely would not.
Personally, someone other than Gumble or Irvin would be better. Irvin is good in the studio doing analysis where writters can guide him. But I don't think he would be very good on the fly.
Hell, for what it's worth, I wouldn't mind having them bring Kieth Oberman in the booth. Or even someone like Bo Jackson, who is both articulate (although many say he is dumb as a stump) and knowledgable while appearing to be politically non-threatening. Better yet lets try Ronnie Lott, Roger Craig, Warren Moon and they already have Lincoln and Rod in studio who could do well in the booth IMO...I mean if there has to be that EEO demand placed on it.

Furthermore, who fucking cares who is calling the game as long as it isn't Rosen and Maas! Having the choice of those two and anyone else...anyone else is going to look 10 X better.
    THERE'S NO CRYING IN FOOTBALL!

I LOVE the Ronnie Lott call! That is spectacular! Nice call.
I love Olberman. He is witty, funny and articulate.
The only problem with Olberman is he carries his politics with him everywhere he goes. You ever heard him on the Dan Patrcik Show on ESPN radio? He is absolutely fantastic.......... and then he goes into some political tirade or inuendo and just destroys it.
The common NFL fan doesn't want to turn on the T.V. and be reminded how bad the world is or how screwed up the political machines are.
They just want to watch football.
Football and sports are to man what soap opera's are to women, IMO.

I've only seen/heard flashes of Olberman since he left ESPN, so I know nothing of his politics. Again, I find it's more a product of what the medium allows than the individual. Granted, thier politics is part of who they are, in some respect it's bound to show itself regardless.
The thing with Lott, is they'd have to have someone alert on the "beeper" cuz he's lible to let one fly now and then in the heat of the moment...which would be A-ok with me. In fact, that might be even better to have someone with a little "umph" in there.

Ah, shall we start the sexist debate now? (Speaking as a woman who is passionate about football and doesn't watch soaps)

My issue with Gumbel is he comes off as believing he is superior to everyone in his knowledge. To me, he's like some on this board view Colin (with apologies to Colin, I'm only using that as an example not a personal opinion) yes he's very good at what he does, but he just doesn't seem to have a sense of humor or humility whether it's his real persona or just the way many perceive him. I remember many saying the same thing about Dan Dierdorf when he was on MNF - that he seemed to work with the assumption that everyone (or most everyone) watching knew nothing about football so he had to explain everything as though he was talking to 6 year olds.

Gumble just does better/comes across better with serious stuff, and football really isn't a "world issue".
