Kickers are practicing putting the ball into a spot about 3-4 yards deep so returners will be tempted to bring it out. With the kicking team 5 yards closer it can work out better. That's more of a skill than just booming it out the back of the end zone for a strong leg.

why cant quarterbacks also be centers and snap the ball to themselves? It would not only save a roster spot or three, but you could add an extra guard or tackle to the O-line. I'm thinking it would be easier in the shotgun, where he could flip it up high in the air and have time to run back and get it. The under center method would be trickier. He'd have to lift the ball up between his legs with one hand and reach around back with the other and grab it. I'm thinking it would be a lot easier to elude the rush using the shotgun method, plus the likelihood of fumbling is greater in the "under center" scenario, where for all intents and purposes you're working with two one-handed players, albeit really only one player. But you get my point. Right?
