When was this? I must've missed it. Every time I've seen him on film (which admittedly isn't much), he has a decent -- not great -- first step, and then his feet stop. He looks to be a waist-bender, too.

Was in his draft write up. I realize that's low cred at this point. I'm not much of an OL authority. He seems pretty fluid to me when working in the 4th Q where he's not overpowered. I'm not going to argue the point, because I really don't know. Its been CLAIMED he has an upside. Whether he does or not is another story. We'll see.

haven't seen tape yet. Want to, partly to see this type stuff.

As for Butler, it's not that he's Nelson type non-potential in exchange for good technique. Similar strength issues, yeah. Sure, more athleticism, but it's not as if he was an elite athlete for the position and just raw. I don't see raw out of him, just unspectacular play. I'm also not a fan of projects at theoretical need positions, nor projects over needs.

I get a little wary of big school guys who aren't physically up to playing in the NFL right off. McClover fits that bill too - and it looks like he's another year away himself - but he made big progress over the season and after the season.

That said, I'm glad we did draft a tackle, and hope Butler can show something soon. I like that we draft at least one lineman a year, and it seems one lineman in the top 100 every year. They can't all be Kalils, that was a bit of a theft, but you can see the disproportion of reaching for a Nelson v/s getting a guy like Kalil or Wharton in the first day. Mathis, as well, seemed like a good enough bet in the 3rd, with enough athleticism, a good bench score, good pedigree, and 4 full years starting. The bust rate goes way down with guys who start for longer periods (though Nelson was a 40+ game starter as well).

Butler hasn't shown much but neither has Mathis and I assume they are fighting for one roster spot now. I'd say its 50-50 but I have a hunch that they'll keep Mathis.

did anyone see this (concerning Bridges)

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2993480

    >>>CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- As Carolina Panthers guard Jeremy Bridges practiced with his teammates Monday, his lawyer entered a not guilty plea on his behalf for a misdemeanor assault charge for pointing a gun at a woman outside a strip club.

Attorney George Laughrun said a trial date was set for Oct. 2.<<<<

I wonder how much of a distraction this will be

    >>>The 6-foot-4, 326-pound Bridges, who was expected to be the team's starting right guard, was demoted to the second team early in training camp in part due to the impending suspension. Rookie Ryan Kalil started at right guard in Carolina's 24-7 exhibition loss to New England on Friday.<<<<

When was that information released because I don't remember that being determined

I don't beleive it was released, it was sort of a given, considering his playing time last season.
