Fever - To be honest my comments weren't directed at you, but I guess I will try one more time to make a subtle point - even if I have to beat you over the head with it. :)

When you are close - as close as the Mavs are - you only make a move like the one they made if it is the right one that puts you over the top by addressing your shortcomings. Jamison does not do that. Not even close.

That is the only thing I am trying to say. I understand Jamison is a better player overall than VE. I understand that three years down the road he will be better than VE. But I also believe that during that 6 week stretch come 2004 when the Mavs will need it most, I'd rather have Van Exel because he doesn't play the same position as Nowitski or Finley - and is a proven playoff player. That is important.

Again, I promise I will take all of this back if come June - NOT December, or April or May but June - Jamison makes me eat those words. But for a man making the MAX (which is yet another consideration), his ass better get them over the top since they won't be able to ask so much as a towel boy to join the Mavs because they'll be paying so much to their fourth option.

And again - just so everyone understands and I don't have to repeat this a fourth time - if money weren't a consideration and we were playing on the playground where shooting is all that matters and the Mavs didn't really, really need someone to actually rebound in a power forward and center heavy conference - then yes, I'd be applauding this with everyone else. Sheesh. I like the dude, I just think he's not the answer to Dallas' biggest problem and he's nowhere near worth max money. And there's no way I would've given up a good playoff player unless I solved my biggest problem.

P.S. Can't believe it, but I did forget about Wallace. That's one kid I've give up almost anyone for if you can keep his head on straight.

    Don't dismiss this scanerio...

Antawn Jamison for the Bobcats first round pick next year if it doesn't work in Dallas. If I am Ed Tapscott & Robert Johnson, I would do this move instantly, especially if ticket sales are slow. If I am Don Nelson, I could clear luxury tax/cap space.

But unlike you myself and a few others don't see it the same way. I don't think the Mavs are that close. They had 5 players and nobody else. So them getting a big man I don't think would put them over the top unless it were an elite one like Shak or Duncan.

But wait VE should have been able to be traded for a Center like that based off of his playoff performance last year. Sure if you are basing this trade on that alone then the Mavs shouldn't have done it. Hell almost any trade is a gamble nowadays.

Here is VE stats since we don't have much more to go by.

    http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/players/profile?statsId=1308

The only stat were VE beat out AJ is assists which I would hope so. Just compare the season stats to the playoff stats and you will see a huge difference. Sure you want your players to all step it up come playoff time. The Sacremento series was the only one where he really stepped it up.

I just think you are over estimating VE value and how good the Mavs are. The only player they have that could get them that great big man is DN imo and I don't see them trading him.

Like I said they have a few good players, but they were more than one good big man away from winning it all.
