Sophomore guard JamesOn Curry of Eastern Alamance, on track to become the all-time scoring leader for N.C. boys' high school basketball, verbally committed Saturday to play for North Carolina.

Curry, who is 6-foot-2, gave UNC coach Matt Doherty the commitment while making an unofficial visit to Chapel Hill, Eastern Alamance coach John Moon said.

"He just really liked coach Doherty and the staff, and also the players they have coming in," Moon said. "This is a great day for JamesOn, and I hope a great day for the University of North Carolina."

Curry generally is considered one of the top 10 players nationally in the high school class of 2004. If he follows through on his non-binding commitment, Curry would become a UNC freshman for the 2004-05 season.

this kid is already possibly the best player in HS basketball in his Sophmore year... he's on pace to break a TON of records... all the major colleges wanted him... guess I can't blame them getting him wrapped up early

JamesOn is NOT the best player in HS basketball. He is very talented with great quicks and good range on the jump shoot. He can score in bunches. However, anyone who says he is the best in HS bb - above Lebron James is crazy.

He's one of the top 5 in his class though, no doubt. He's a scorer. The Heels have been after this guy hard the whole way, so it's nice to get a verbal.

Now they've gotta do something about this big man situation.

Um Lebron graduated... he's not considered a HS player anymore

Um no. LeBron is now a senior HS basketball player. He was a junior last yr.
