my sister has a yellow lab named Gunnar

 

we recently installed one ourselves.

Bought it at Home Depot. Came with 500 feet of wire (maybe more - we bought extra), the collar, flags, training video etc. Cost about $250 - $300. Fancy would know for sure - she bought it. Compare that to $1,000 quote we got from Invisble Fence.

A regualr fence would have cost a fortune on our pie shaped lot. It was easy as hell to install. We still haven't buried all the wire around back, but in the yard it was an easy two man job - I split the ground with a shovel and fancy pushed the wire in. Pull the shovel out and it closes right back over the wire. Better than digging a trench and having to cover it later.

As for other dogs getting into the yard, how big an issue is that really? If you are in a neghborhood, most people have their dogs fenced in, tied up, on leashes, in the house. In this day there just aren't that many dogs ( especially the kind you or your dog should fear) wandering around.

Ours pushed the limit a few times in training and got the shock as he ran through. Took about three times and he hasn't done it in a while. We do leave him outside when we go out for the day. Better in the yard than in the house. They get used to and respect the boundaries quicker than you think.

And it looks like we'll be buying a second collar since Jake has gotten a companion. Again the family grows...

I don't like invisible fences.... Wanna know why? I'll tell ya... It's not for fear of what else would come in the yard..... But if your dog sees something and charges after it, he will likely cross the fence, and then not be able to get back in.....
