If I run through the XP installation on an old laptop will it automatically delete everything in the computer and be like a new pc?

Depends on whether you tell it to repair the existing installation or if you tell it install from scratch.

don't you have to delete the partition to make it super fresh and clean?

That's what I always do. Then format, and clean install. I've never tried to reinstall over an existing installation.

Just don't do what I did at the Chinaman's office. Had a USB drive hooked up to the computer with all the backup stuff on it and files from the harddrive. Not paying attention to what I was doing, I deleted the partion on the USB drive by mistake. Always unplug, turn off, and discard any drive you don't want to erase. :throwrock:

So no repair, just a baked from scratch install. Gotcha. Gonna do this over the weekend. Borrowed Nonie's XP disk and my laptop has so much work crap on it it is slow as hell. Only cost me 75 bucks though.

That's the best option if you don't care about losing data. The next best option would be to backup the data and then nuke it.
