    did you just let the machine sit there and grind away for awhile? photoshop takes awhile to load if you don't have hundreds of meg of ram. also set the swap files to a standard size. you may have to go to an older version of photoshop for that machine, I've got 5.5 if you need it.

    download the latest update from Adobe and install it
