The NHL wants to stage an outdoor game on Jan. 1, 2008, and the Penguins have informed the league they would be willing to participate -- as the visiting team. NHL officials would not comment, but the league is believed to favor an outdoor game, tentatively titled "Ice Bowl," that would air on NBC on New Year's Day -- likely opposite college football bowl games.

Apparently the NHL asked the Pens if they would host but they declined b/c they are busy with the new arena. Other rumored sites were Detroit and Buffalo. On Jan 1st the Pens are at Buffalo so it could happen at Rich Stadium. I'm sure they would crush college bowl games in the ratings.

Buffalo-Pittsburgh on New Year's Day is a real possibility. Stoopid to choose that date, but I'll be there if they do it. And it's Ralph Wilson Stadium.

    It was a college game.

Then again Saturday's game at Spartan Stadium between Michigan and Michigan State could become the game that triggered a return to the days of outdoor hockey.
But probably what Michigan coach Red Berenson will remember about playing in front of 74,554 fans is that players on both teams produced a world-class effort in the game that established a new world's record for hockey attendance.

Montreal and Edmonton did it a few years back. I thought Jose Theodore in the ski hat was cool.
