I think this thread was regarding not having my usual level of off-season excitement. I'm sorta pumped for some live football. This stupid Smith thing didn't wow me though.

no--just pointing out the obvious--you can hang around and bitch about how hard it is, or cheer for 1 of the other 31 teams.

    it's really very simple.

It's all true. I was just answering a question asked pertaining to the subject. I'm sorry the facts upset you.

I don't look down on FF, though. That's the biggest problem with the above.
I'm not terribly motivated for it, but I run a league at work and a league for friends. You could say I look down on Goalline, since I don't do it, but I really don't know anything about it so I can't say it's not something I'd enjoy if I did it.

The thing I'm trying to figure out is whether it's a lack of excitement about the game this year in general, or issues directly with the team. That's more what I'm after.

    maybe so.
I don't feel that way, so it's a new concept to me.

either way, I'm a fan of the team and not of a coach or a GM. If they tank, they're still my team. I do like the direction they're going in - I don't see a looming disaster in the near future. This is a solid team, and they fixed a number of toughness and trench related issues they were having. If the current regime goes, there's a lot to build off of. If the current regime stays, I believe that the youth and changes they've made in 07 and 08 are exciting building blocks.

Since it's a side-argument going on, don't get me wrong. I don't think you have to be gung-ho about everything to be a fan. I won't tell you to go root for someone else. Most fans are about convenience to an end, and certainly, myself included we started watching and rooting for this team because of geographical necessity.

Heh, this might've been where I went wrong then. I took the bump to mean that you still weren't interested about the upcoming year.

Certainly disappointment in the team and some of the players has contributed. Maybe I'm subconsciously protecting myself from how my weekends would get ruined by a Panthers fuckup, who knows? I almost think that pulling for a team makes games less enjoyable because I seem to have a lot more fun watching two colleges I don't give a crap about than hoping the Panthers don't do something stupid. I don't know if that explains the general apathy, though, since I actually have a moderately good feeling about the Panthers this season.

ehhhh. i don't have the same sense of dread at this point that i had last year about the team.

don't know if that is because it is too early, since we haven't had a pretend game yet.

or if it's because they just seem to be put together a little better this time around. in that they actually went out and did some things to try and make the team better...not the "21 of 22 starters etc" line we got fed last year.

but i do get the feeling that while we may be better this year, we may not see a big difference in record. we struggled...and i mean struggled...to 7-9 last year, and maybe we struggle to 9-7 this year.

    "it beats the alternative."

    not apathetic. ambivalent maybe.

    that makes sense.
and yeah, I don't have a college team for similar reasons.

I guess Hackett counted as our splash, but it was more of a good sized ripple than anything else.

Our revamped OL has me more excited than anything else, really. There are a lot of questions to answer, but I like most of what I've heard so far. Color me 'cautiously optimistic'.
