Jeff O'Neil doesn't suck. I see a C on his jersey in the near future.

RALEIGH, N.C. (June 26, 2002) – Jim Rutherford, CEO and General Manager of the Eastern Conference Champion Carolina Hurricanes, announced today the team has signed forward Jeff O’Neill to a two-year contract. As per club policy, no terms were released.

“Jeff is an integral part of our team,” Rutherford said. “Not only is Jeff our top goal scorer, but he’s shown the ability to score goals at key times for our team. He is one of our team leaders and we’re very happy to re-sign him.”

O’Neill (6’1’’, 205 lbs.) had the second best point total of his seven-year NHL career this past season (64). He was first on the team in goals (31) and was third in assists (33) and points. He has led the Hurricanes in goals the past three seasons. Selected by the franchise with the fifth overall pick in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft, O’Neill is ranked fifth in franchise history in games played (524), eighth in goals (154), eighth in power play goals (46) and 10th in points (321).

O’Neill, 26, had a strong postseason during the Hurricanes run to the Stanley Cup Finals. He led Carolina in postseason goals with eight and was third in points with 13. His overtime goal in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals at Toronto after getting hit with a puck in the right eye early in the game helped propel the Hurricanes to the series victory. Overall in the postseason, O’Neill was tied for fourth in the league in goals and fourth in shots on goal (72).

Three words:

Collective
Bargaining
Agreement

Any player that signs past 2004 (when the CBA expires) is either 1) a dingbat or 2) sending a message that he REALLY loves the team he's with.
