What are the reasons to blitz? Does the blitz only really count if you get a sack or could there be other reasons?

The blitz is to create pressure on the QB, hopefully resulting in a sack, an errant throw, or an early throw. When the offense is already throwing on a three step drop, they're planning to throw early so that is no advantage for the defense. The routes are shorter and are structured to exploit holes in the coverage, holes that will be even larger during any blitz (the more people brought, obviously the bigger the holes).

Against a three step you either want to press man or flood a short zone. Sadly we haven't been able to do either because our coverage sucks, which is also why we couldn't stop AZ when they were using 5 and 7 step drops.

So which takes longer, the 3 step drop or kicking a FG/extra point?

The kick takes longer, but I can see where you're going with this. If you want to be asinine and say "is it possible to reach the QB before he throws if you bring all 11 defenders," then yes it is possible. Of course, that never happens on a normal play from scrimmage. It isn't possible to reach the QB on a three step drop when you're bringing up to 8 people unless the offense screws up.

No, not saying you will reach the QB, but you can still force the errant throw or early throw, which are almost just as good as the sack. I am also not saying bring the house, but bringing that one extra player could make the difference.

Also you putting pressure on the offense is what could cause them to screw up.

BTW, where do you get 11 defenders from? You really do like to add to what people say.

Not on a three step drop, you can't. That's the whole point of using a three step drop, that it completely neutralizes the pass rush (with or without a blitz). It effectively shuts off most of the offense's deep capabilities, but it's worthwhile if you continue to complete the short passes.

The "kicking a FG/extra point" comment. Believe it or not, your mind is not that hard to read.

Yes you can still get pressure, if you couldn't then why rush anybody, let's just drop 11 back into coverage.

Errr, also you do realize not all 11 players rush on FT/PAT, right? Please tell me you were just trying to make a funny. :thud:

Why do you think we were dropping 8? You rush 3 in part because you only have so many quality DBs, and because if you do manage to play good coverage then you need to make the QB get rid of the ball sometime. That's only necessary if you can first close down the short passes, however. I have seen the Pats drop 9, but I think the most anyone else drops is 8.

You do on a PAT, and you do on FGs if the block is on. Obviously that's what you were referring to, as you had no other reason to bring it up. I do find it amusing that you're pretending I misread you, however. I guess I can spare you the trouble of defending the times when you're wrong if I simply beat you to the punch, so you can pretend you were never going to say the wrong thing in the first place.

Have you ever been wrong about anything football? Let me guess, you will either say no, or refuse to answer and respond in trying to figure out where I am going with this question.

Too many times to count. Everyone makes mistakes, but considering that I'm right maybe 90-95% of the time and you're wrong 60-75% of the time (if not more), the chances of you being correct and me being wrong simultaneously are pretty darn low.
