I bought a Lexar USB2.0 multi card reader for the wife. Xp doesn't recognize it, but according to the install disk and the website, with XP you don't need to install anything. So now I need a driver that supposedly I don't need. :worried:

I just got a Lexar SD card USB jump drive. My computer automatically identified it as "Removable Drive F" as soon as I plugged it in. I have Windows ME. The instructions says it also works with XP without installing anything.

You shouldn't need any drivers at all. So, that likely means you are missing USB 2.0 support or something silly. Are you running Windows XP SP1 or just plain old Windows XP?

    Windows XP home w/sp1
I thought about that so I updated to see if there was something I missed. This is also the 2nd reader. The first one I took back thinking it was broke.

XP is recognizing the reader. However it is not accessible since 1)you have not assigned a drive letter to it/or XP is trying to assign it the next letter after your hard drive. (Last hard drive = C, XP tries to assign D even though that is probably a CD drive) Or 2) you have to tell XP to start allow access (I don't remember what this is called)

If the Reader is recognized as a drive:
Right click My Computer, click Manage, double click Disk Managment under the Storage category. Right click the reader and change the drive letter. If you have to activate (or whatever it is called) the drive then look for a command to do so.

If the Reader is recognized as removeable storage:
You can try changing the drive letter or activating it or Search Microsoft Support for the fix.

Xp says "USB device not recognized--a USB device atteched to this computer has malfunctioned, Windows does not recognize it. For assistance click this message." It takes me to the device manager and says no driver files installed, I click on update driver, it says nothing available.

Should I assume you got this message when you were in Computer Management?
