    Thanks to all of you for your help on this. It's some sort of damage to the soundcard itself, I guess. I spent hours on downloads & re-installs & stuff; & it just ain't working.

    Wah.

    Well, I guess I need to either buy a new soundcard, or look into a whole new cpu--eventually. Sound isn't essential; but I sure do miss it.
