    OK, two more suggestions:

    1. When you changed out the hard drive, the sound card physically came loose from its slot. Open the box and make sure the card is set firmly into the motherboard.

    2. You ran Windows update, but only did the security updates. Go back and install EVERY suggested upgrade.

I did do every suggested upgrade. Then I undid it all, apparently, when I did my recovery disk--which put everything back to the original setup (I did, however, have sense enough to not have it entirely re-format the drive). I only figured this out because I just went back to Windows Update & it went thru the whole original scan & suggest thing.

Tried clicking on 'update hardware,' but it just says 'page not found.'

God, I hate to disconnect & re-open the whole cpu again; but I guess I must. How do I know what the fuck I'm looking for in there?

(& thanks, all of you, for trying to help me with this.) :)

Look for the place where the external speakers plug in. That's the sound card. It's either an integrated part of the motherboard, in which case you can close up and forget this part, or it's a card that can be removed from the PC. If the latter, check to make sure it's well-seated (while the machine is off, of course).

    Good luck.

Okay, the sound card is well-seated. Everything appears to be connected as it should be, nothing loose. I'll hook 'er back up & see what happens.

You checked all the obvious stuff like speaker wires, jacks plugged into appropriate sockets, volume turned on, mute off, etc.?

He's good at lots of vital things--but this ain't one of them :(

Oh yeah--all that. In the course of this quest for sound, I've gotten messages etc. that definitely show that either no sound devices are installed--or at least the computer doesn't recognize any.

Per a previous PM---When I go to Control Panel: System: Hardware: Device Manager, none of the devices listed is labeled as Sound, Video, or Game Controller.

In the next little while, I'll look at Windows Update again to see if I can just peruse drivers & install some. & if that yields nothing, I'll just Google sound driver downloads & see what that brings up.

If you don't see that entry in Device Manager, it's either not detecting the device, or it's listed as an Unknown. Delete any unknown devices (it's OK, you won't hurt anything), then reboot. If you get prompted for drivers, put in the CD with the drivers.

If you have no unknowns, you may have a bad sound card or there may be a problem with the expansion board.
