Golfers, favorite club?

I think it's somewhere in between. If you are a hack and shoot in triple digits toting 1000.00 clubs will only make you look good. But if you are a bogey golfer better equipment will definately give you IMO 5-7 fewer shots per round. Gotta have that baseline of talent

And I agree with Y2, equipment def makes a difference. My first set of clubs were Jack Nickalus blades, not forgiving at all and a very poor recommendation on the salesman's part. My second set was Calloway X12s. Very forgiving club and it does make a difference with the cavity backs and perimeter weighting. Off centered shots don't vibrate your damn teeth out and go pretty straight.

Well, as far as the equipment not making a difference in higher handicapers, that's just bullshit. You put a set of blades in the hands of someone hitting oversized, and they'll have problems.

Unless your club head speed is better than 120mph, don't even think about 100 compression. Equipment matters, bigtime.

Actually I don't know what to take of your expert comment, but just in case, I'll set the record straight - I've never claimed to be an expert in golf nor did I intend to be above, I merely stated what scratch golfers have told me. (In regards to that football board - , well I've gone on record mutlitple occasions as being the Monday morning QB type guy, never claimed to be a draft expert, never claimed to understand salary cap) - really don't have a desire to...

But back to the golf equipment, my intent was mainly for the guy that already has say an $500 - $800 set of Cavity Backs and he goes out and buys the latest and greatest every year (6 months) a new club or ball comes out. I agree on blades versus oversized.

In the end most high handicapers should take that $200-$400 they spend on the latest and greatest clubs every 6 months and buy themselves some lessons. (I know I need them).

I play with a set of blades. They are ancient though. (Has everyone figured out that I am playing with nothing but hand-me-downs? ). Anyway, 1964 Jack Nicklaus clubs. Bought at JC Penney. they are older than I am. When I talk about distances with people I play with, they think I'm crazy. You can KILL a ball with the 8-iron in the set and the ball is not going much further than 150 yards. The loft in that 8-iron is FAR greater than any 8-iron you'll find in a modern set. I like it that way though. The irons give me a LOT of touch from 150 in and this is important since I'm such a puss off the tee. I do have decent woods though.

Anyway, people have been bugging me to get new irons for years now but I won't let these go now. Maybe my score would go down - maybe not. I've grown very comfy with these...
