My favorite club is a 1951 Louisville Slugger sand wedge. It's a hand-me-down from the old man - he bought it as part of L'ville Slugger set in Germany when he took up golf in the service in 1952. The club head is the heaviest head I've ever seen. I honestly think that you could use this club to chop rocks if you wanted to...
Anyway, since the head is so heavy, this club will lift a ball out of ANYTHING. So it's great to carry around if you suck like I do and find yourself hitting from weird places all the time.

I typically see used (but in great condition) clubs in local Golf Shops. I saw a full set of lefty (which I am) Callaway Big Bertha irons for $350! You can't beat that price anywhere.
If you are a beginner looking for a starter set - my advice is to pay a little bit more and build a set of good clubs. Otherwise, your starter set will likely be throw away later.
Get nice irons and a cheap driver to start. You can pick up a real cheap putter at Wal-Mart for now. Go to a local golf shop and get those irons. You will be better off down the road IMO.
Also, slydevil is right. Bargin with the local shop owner. They want to move clubs if the price is reasonable.

Odessey actually made an actual Happy Gilmore putter. I was going to buy it, but it cost 200 bucks. If you looked hard enough, you could probably find one.

Putter. It's a Ping, face balanced. I bought it used, somebody trained it well. Last time out I sank my first putt, 75 footer, birdied the par 5.
My other club is my 2-iron. Tommy Armour Oversized. Off tee, I'm usually about right at the distance of a 3-wood, sometimes more, and almost always safe.
Just add then 9-iron and I'm good to go. I drink more beers than I use clubs.
Hey Bear, they have an Edwin Watts up there? I got a great deal on a used set. You can take the whole set as demos, and if you like'em, you can buy'em. Liquid Metal clubs just dropped to $200, Taylor Made Ti's too. Nike drivers also came down, but not sure how much.

Know a couple of scratch golfers and I tend to agree with them. All you boys that shoot 80s and higher (especially 90s and higher) really have no clue about golf equipment in regards to your golf game. Its all upstairs boys.
Been shootin in the 110s lately cause I don't play but once every 3 months, was in the low 90s when I played a whole bunch. Anyway, moral of the story, I never blame my golf equipment for a bad round.
But, my favorite club is my trusty 3 wood. (225 off the fairway) I'd rather be 225-230 off the green than 150. Damn short game.

Seems your an expert even in things you suck at.
Well, as far as the equipment not making a difference in higher handicapers, that's just bullshit. You put a set of blades in the hands of someone hitting oversized, and they'll have problems. I use Sensecore shafts because I get a better feel then regular steel and more consistantcy than graphite. There's a huge difference in golf balls as well. I cannot putt with Top Rocks at all, or make them stick the green from over 100 out. Titlest are the best I've found, and I like the red box, less spin and 90 compression. Unless your club head speed is better than 120mph, don't even think about 100 compression. Equipment matters, bigtime.
