I was thinking he was going to go to the folder "windows" and press delete....

the next time he starts his machine, windows will fail to load and he'll get all kinds of error messages and eventually the DOS prompt.

it's probably the interface that's causing her problems. You can switch that back to the old fashion way :D

To do this follow these steps(These are the fastest ways):
-1) Right Click the Task Bar at the bottom. its the bar next to the Start Button at the Bottom and select Properties From the little pop-up window.

-2) The Taskbar and Start Menu Properties window will come up. At the Top of that window there are two tabs. One that says Taskbar and the Other says Start Menu. Click the one that says Start Menu

-3) Now you should have the option to choose Start Menu or Classic Start Menu. Select Classic Start Menu and then Press OK

-4) Now the next step is to Right Click on your Desktop. And select Properties From the little pop-up window.

-5) This should have brought up the Display Properties window. Up top there should be 5 Tabs:
--Themes
--Desktop
--Screen Saver
--Appearance
--Settings

-6) Select the Desktop Tab. Near the bottom-left of that new window you will see a button that says Customize Desktop. Click that button.

-7) The Desktop Items window will open.

-8) In that window check each of the check boxes next to:
--My Documents
--My Computer
--My Network Places
--Internet Explorer

-9) Then click OK (It will close the Desktop Items window)

-10) The click OK on the Display Properties window.

Now your screen SHOULD look like it did back when you used Windows 98. Hope that helps :) ;)

The problem she is having with xp is practically everytime she shuts down her computer and then starts it back up she gets a blue screen that says something isnt working right. The computer wont let you do anything at all. She once had to reformat her hard drive to get everythign working but she ended up loosing her roxio cd burner and now cant burn cd's. We cant find the drivers for it on any of the cds she got with her computer. She has even looked for it on the net. She has to use my cd burner is she wants to burn anything. I have also noticed, even though xp is supposed to be faster, I dont think it is. Right now she has only the bare nessesities on her computer and its slow as hell. My computer is four years old and is quite a bit faster then hers.
Brain Ill let her know she can go back at least to what looks like windows 98. I have another question, how do I get to the start ini folder so I can disable the start up stuff by the clock? I know where it is in 98 but for the life of me I cant find where they hid it in xp.

roxio update for XP

http://roxio.com/

update is on the righthand side. if she just bought the pc from gateway, take it back and get it fixed

Imonlyhuman,

stick it out for another month or so...Microsoft is coming out with a service pack for XP. I think that should take care of the problem.

We have been to the roxio site and downloaded the driver but nothing works. The message she gets when she starts up the software is something is making the windows unstable and it will shut the program down. She has uninstalled the easy cd creater then reinstalled it then tried the update and still she gets the same message. Dont be afraid to tell me to go into the belly of her computer if thats what I have to do. Ive been in mine several times and mine still works like a charm.

Have you tried this? go to the Start button and click RUN and then type in "MSCONFIG". You will see the system.ini, win.ini, and start up tabs at the top.

The XP software that came with the computer, is it a full version of the software or "Gateways" version in a "restore all" type of thing? In the past I've found that the software has problems if you've added anything at all other than the way it came, even just ram. Once I formated and installed the version of software you buy seperate, the computer ran much much better and allowed me to install and upgrade without any glitches. Just a thought.

ahhhhh ok Kakia thanks. I was putting the wrong thing in that run box when I was trying to find things. Oh yeah, my daughter found out that jukebox that she has burns cd's. I dont use jukebox so I didnt know it had them capabilities. We looked through her cd's that came with the computer and we cant find the program that she used before she reformatted the computer. Oh well, at least she was a happy camper yesterday burning her music.
