Sean Gilbert is a prime candidate to be released by the team.

Gilbert carries a cap value of $7.26 million into the 2002 season.  Releasing him after June 1 would save $3 million. The 2003 cap hit would be $6.63 million.

Regardless of whether the Panthers choose to take their medicine on this one now or later, it's highly unlikely that Gilbert will finish his deal in Carolina.  Under contract for the next four seasons, his cap numbers are $9.76 million, $9.76 million, and $8.51 million for 2003, 2004, and 2005, respectively.

So, who are canidates for DT? I thought the Panthers acted like they wanted Gilbert for another year and he wanted to stay. Did the restructure his contract just so he could be released?

Well, he took a pay cut. We need DT's. He's likely to play much better with the line we have now.

I'm thinking he may be gone after next season. I'd rather have Giblet than Williams.

But yeah, he could go.

If he is going to be cut (which I don't think will be this year), it was awfully stupid to have him out there during mini camp.

Normally teams that are cutting a player will not let him participate in off season drills where there is a chance for the player to be injured.

I think his back is giving him problems anyway, so I'm not sure how involved he is.
