After five seasons and a Super Bowl championship, the New York Giants have released LB Antonio Pierce. Pierce says a recent MRI on the bulging disc in his neck revealed no problems. The 31-year old has been steadily declining and will have to look for employment elsewhere.
“They obviously wanted to move in another direction. I have no animosity,” Pierce told the Newark Star-Ledger. “If anything, I’m excited about it. One thing about it – I’m at peace with it, because I know for five years I gave this organization, this city, everybody, I gave everything I had. I don’t regret anything. Any situation, even the negative with the Plaxico (Burress) situation.”

Somewhat surprising since they dont have a replacement for him on their roster right now. His neck problems must be pretty severe.

We have no need for a MLB even if he were healthy but it just seems odd to me for him to be done at 31. I agree the neck injury must be pretty bad.

31 is old for a linebacker, especially someone who plays inside. Some guys are effective past that age, but that's more of the exception than the rule.

Well, my bulging disks are in my lower back, not neck (but I have three nah nah), but bulging can lead to herniated especially in an active sport being hit, at which point his career is likely over. And I'd guess he has pretty chronic, if manageable pain. I don't play football, but I have a job that involves lifting, bending & wrestling dogs that sometimes out weigh me and I haven't been pain free in 16 years and by Fridays my heating pad is my best friend. At his age, I'm not sure I'd want to throw a lot of money at someone with his issue since one wrong hit - or even lifting weight or working out and pulling in a wrong direction could put him out for a while if not a season.
