I guess y'all have noticed the comments on Smitty's status made by Gman and Rivera.

Openness is nice but isn't always the best policy. Why the fuck couldn't they have just said Smith is under contract? It's as if they wanted to piss him off. And the fans too, I'm thinking bad thoughts about them right now. Not because they don't want to pay him that much, but the way they put it out there.

I love the guy. Hes been the heart and soul of the team for a long time.

But its time for him to go. Hes not the player he once was and those attributes that made him the heart of the team in his younger days make him a cancer now. Not that hes a bad person or anything, but we need an actual threat at WR. I hate to say it but hes not that anymore.

WRs, good ones, are prima donas by nature. This, in his mind, is his team. Even at a cheaper price, Smitty would come unglued if some other WR, a starting calibre guy, was getting targets he thought he should still get. IMO hes too much of a competator to be a Hines Ward in his last years at Pitt.

Retire his number, put his name in the ring of honor, and put a statue of him at the front gate. As a fan, I think thats what the team "owes" him.

Id feel better if the band aid were just ripped of now than slowly peeled back and watch him decline for a few more years.

    How so?

Love 89, but cmon man. We basicly need an entire O line, most likely a DE, 2 starting CBs, at least one starting safety and to pay Cam if they decide to keep him, which is likely. Paying him $7mil (correct me if im wrong) this year is insane.

First of all, what he said was hardly inflammatory by Steve Smith standards. Secondly, cutting him only saves two million dollars. Thirdly, if you cut him, the only WR's left on your roster are Marvin McNutt, Tavarris King and Kealoha Pilares. You take a position that is already a need and turn it into a black hole, for the sake of two million dollars.

Ok, so when Cam is on his backside hows 89 getting the ball? Im no cap expert, but not paying the 4 mil bonus should save us more than 2 mil plus the 3 mil salary.

At any rate, say we get a good starting wr in the draft or otherwise, Ill kiss your ass if Smitty doesnt have a problem just being a roleplayer.

He doesn't have a problem being a roleplayer. You're overeating to a fairly benign comment to the media. Unless you're on record saying we should cut him 24 hours ago.

Not an overreaction to the article at all. Its just an honest assessment of where the team and Smith are right now. Our needs are at some pretty expensive slots. LTs, DEs, Cbs and Qbs are big money/high draft pick items. Not to mention Wrs and S.

We have spent big money at RB, which is dependant on the OL; which by the way wasnt exactly run blocking worth a fuck. And, oh yeah, we have a QB who at his best is a one read and tuck and run player.

I just dont think the team is in a position to over pay, over value or possibly both one particular player regardless of what he has done over the years. I take no joy in saying it, really. I wish it wasnt the case and the Steve Smith of 5 or 10 years ago was who we were discussing.
