    STANTON LEAPFROGGING QUINN?

One of the darlings of the scouting combine is Michigan State quarterback Drew Stanton. Word is that several teams now consider Stanton to be ahead of Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, due in large part to great interviews with teams in Indy, and strong overall intangibles.

While no one doubts that Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis has prepared Quinn to play quarterback in a pro-style offense, there are questions about whether he possesses the leadership abilities to be successful in the NFL.

As we've previously heard, there also are questions about Quinn's ability to perform on a big stage, and some concerns about whether he wants to be a Hollywood type or whether he is committed to being the best football player he can be. Similar questions knocked Matt Leinart down to the tenth overall spot in the 2006 draft.

So don't be surprised if Stanton gets drafted after JaMarcus Russell of LSU, and prior to Quinn.

I've heard of them referring to the speed of the ball before, but I'm never seen any numbers. Of course, there are about 10 different numbers, but only a few get published. Sounds like a good idea to look at.

notes from Sunday....I'm stunned at Chansi Stuckey's time. He always looked fast at Clemson. Didn't Antwan Randle-El post a 40 in the 4.6's?

    Sunday updates

    • The biggest story of Sunday's workout so far is Georgia Tech WR Calvin Johnson. At 6-foot-5 and 239 pounds, Johnson ran the third-best time of all the wide receivers with a 4.35 -- and he did it with borrowed sneakers.

    • Tennessee WR Robert Meachem had a great workout and ran a 4.36. LSU's Dwayne Bowe (4.51) and Clemson's Chansi Stuckey (4.61) didn't run as well as expected

    • As anticipated, QBs Brady Quinn and JaMarcus Russell, as well as WR Ted Ginn Jr. and WR Dwayne Jarrett did not workout. Troy Smith threw but he did not run because he's been "on the banquet circuit" and needs more time to prepare.

    • Oklahoma RB Adrian Peterson ran the fastest time of the RBs so far with a 4.38 in the 40-yard dash.

    • Also, Louisville RB Michael Bush is still rehabilitating his season-ending leg injury and is not working out today

Plenty fast for Bowe. TFY said he had an outstanding workout. They have his 2 40s at 4.54 and 4.46.

Calvin Johnson ran 4.45 and 4.38.

Those are all hand timed. It depends on which scout they talked to. the official, electronically timed numbers come out later.

Jay Alford, DT, Penn State 6-3- 1/3, 304
Will do full workout but will not do bench press. Alford strained a pec during his training for the Combine. The Steelers have talked to him about possibly playing end in the 3-4. Other teams interested are the Chiefs, Jaguars, Eagles, Giants, Bengals, and Panthers.
