I haven't seen his "stats" from the combine (ht/wt), but he could put some weight on (muscle, not fat) if he plays WR. But the speed! You need that speed to separate from the DBs. He's a lot faster than some of the other TEs at the combine. Just think Smitty! :bounce:

4.5 for a receiver is pretty damn slow isn't it?

for a guy in the first two rounds, yeah. Overall, maybe not, but you have to be great at everything else. Guys like Keyshawn and Proehl weren't 4.50 guys. Moose was 4.5 coming out, I thought. A 4.5 receiver isn't anything special, no.

And sure, he's not a great blocker. Hell, our line doesn't feature great blockers, they're all wall-off guys. Why we would have to pass off on a TE because he's got some learning to do and some lifting to do, hell, I wish we were as stringent on our line prospects. I'm not saying draft him at 14, and he won't be there in 2 now by any means, but it's probably time we stop passing on guys because they're not Orlando Pace blocking the run and Tony Gonzalez when the ball's in the air.

Hell, we have 45 line coaches now. Someone can teach a guy to block.

Here are the 40 times for the TEs yesterday:

Group 3 (TE) -- Top Eight Results: 40-Yard Dash
    1. Greg Olsen Miami (Fla.) 4.51
    2. Michael Allan Whitworth 4.71
    3. Gijon Robinson Missouri Western St. 4.71
    4. Ben Patrick Delaware 4.74
    5. Derek Schouman Boise St. 4.74
    6. Dante Rosario Oregon 4.76
    7. Kevin Boss Western Oregon 4.78
    8. Scott Chandler Iowa 4.78

Look at the gap between Olsen and #2 Allan. That's a big difference. Now look at the times for the 40 of the WRs:

    Group 4 (WR) -- Top 10 Results: 40-Yard Dash
    1. Yamon Figurs Kansas St. 4.30
    2. Jason Hill Washington St. 4.32
    3. Calvin Johnson Georgia Tech 4.35
    4. David Clowney Virginia Tech 4.36
    5. Aundrae Allison East Carolina 4.39
    6. Steve Breaston Michigan 4.41
    7. Anthony Gonzales Ohio St. 4.44
    8. Jonathan Holland Louisiana Tech 4.45
    9. Craig Davis Louisiana St. 4.46
    10. Johnnie Lee Higgins UTEP 4.48

Olsen is slightly slower than the bottom WR time.

Why would he want to be a slow reciever when he can be a fast TE? Seems like it would be in his best interest to stay a TE.

Depends on the WR. If he's a smurf, 4.5 is dissappointing, but average. 4.5 is very good for a WR who's at least, say, 6 feet or 200 lbs or over. Olsen is 254 lbs. KJ is probably about 4.8 now. He was about 4.6 coming out of college. Lots of starting WRs in the NFL run about 4.5. Its not exceptional, but not slow either.

In other news Calvin Johnson just ran about a 4.35. That's freakish. His position is the only thing that might keep him from being #1 overall. Hopefully someone will get him before TB can. I REALLY don't want them to have him.

Now don't compare those 4.5s with that 4.35. Johnson is just in another world.
