I know a tiny bit about this cause I had a buddy in grad school who was in the promoter business. The concert promoters will only book acts that get local radio airplay QCH. They're too scared and biased to book other bands. Without a college or non-clear channel radio station in Charlotte, there is little chance that we'll ever see those types of bands.

To be honest, I was shocked that Wilco booked a show here.

PS - I would love to catch Andrew Byrd or The Hold Steady. In my experience, it's hard to find people to go to those shows with. I usually hook up with out of towners.

Speaking of college radio stations . . .

Wasnt UNC Charlotte suppose to get one in 1992-93? The school actually bought the equipment for the station (or were in the process of doing it) when the entire deal got scrapped.

I saw tons of bands at Tremont 5+ years ago. That place has always been a hole but it was still such a fun place to go.

WFAE is UNCC's former station. Like football, they foolishly abandoned it.

I believe that some students started up something called "the CROW" (WCRW?) that never took off. I think it was campus-only.

I honestly don't think that many bands like playing here. The venues have historically sucked.

Exactly. Charlotte gets the BIG shows, but the college towns get the lesser known acts. Hell, Columbia gets a lot of shows we don't get.

BUT...King Diamond IS confirmed for March at the Tremont. I WILL be going. Who's with me?

It'd be nice if the business community here would recognize what a thriving music scene could do for the city and would do something more to compete for these bands.

there are a number of clubs, etc. in the charlotte area that offer a variety of acts.

    http://www.visulite.com/

    http://www.theeveningmuse.com/

    http://www.neighborhoodtheatre.com/

and there are others which have been mentioned in this thread ...
    tremont http://www.tremontmusichall.com/
    amos southend http://www.amossouthend.com/

and probably many others with which i'm unfamiliar. and the bigger venues too ... verizon ampitheater, blumenthal, spirit square.

heck ... alison krause and union station were at the arena recently. and like hard harry i too would be interested in hearing The Hold Steady sometime. they were in chapel hill last year.
