We have WR Taylor Stubblefield in the fold, who else joins the team via FA?

    Panthers to sign USC linebacker

CHARLOTTE -- The Carolina Panthers haven't released their full list of undrafted free agent signings, but they did pick up a local product and one of the most productive players in college football history.
The Panthers were expected to sign seven or eight rookie free agents total, four of which are South Carolina linebacker Marcus Lawrence, Purdue wide receiver Taylor Stubblefield, Samford wide receiver Efrem Hill and Kansas State offensive tackle Jon Doty.

Lawrence, who grew up in Aiken and starred at Silver Bluff High, was figured by most to be a mid-round pick. There was talk around the league that some of his college coaches made some disparaging remarks about his work ethic, which may have affected his draft stock.

His agent, David Canter, said that Lawrence was extremely motivated after the draft snub, and was looking forward to his opportunity here.

"They're getting a great player," Canter said of Lawrence. "He's ready to show people they made a mistake."

The 6-foot-2, 243-pound Lawrence had an impressive junior season for the Gamecocks, finishing second on the team with 99 tackles, adding 9.5 tackles for loss. He was slowed his senior year by a groin injury, which cut into his numbers.

There was never any dip in Stubblefield's statistical brilliance.

The 5-11, 174-pound receiver finished his career with the Boilermakers with 316 receptions, most in NCAA history. He wasn't drafted primarily because of his size and disappointing 40-yard dash times (4.75 seconds at Purdue's pro day).

The 6-0, 179-pound Hill shows some potential as a returner, whiled the 6-foot-7, 307-pound Doty was deemed worth a look because of his massive frame and agility.

The team is expected to announce the rest of the list today.

    • Several Panthers officials, including coach John Fox and general manager Marty Hurney, flew to New Jersey on Monday for the burial of Sam Mills.
