I think it was actually the national media attention that changed things. The fanbase seemed to turn on Hurney about a year earlier, but when Grantland and those other sites all wrote articles about what a hardly believable failure he was, suddenly Marty was out on his ass.

I remember all of that happening around the same timeframe. A lot of the fanbase was still up Hurney's ass during Cam's rookie season.

Lovie Smith was a really good hire. They'll probably never be an elite team but they won't yo-yo up and down either.

Sometimes I think teams deserve at least a C for not even getting involved in the whole FA crapshoot.

Do you still get a C if you're doing it not because your team feels it's benefits rarely equal the salary ramifications but because your teams finances have been so mismanaged you have no choice but to abstain?

To simplify is being too poor to buy cigarettes a healthy decision?

Take out the Smitty fiasco and nothing surprises me, kind of what I expected (which means I expected a replay of last year, cheap one year deals). Except going after Collins, that was a pleasant surprise. Getting cucked by TB, not so pleasant. Very telling too, I think. Though we may could have landed him by increasing the deal enough to offset the state income taxes, and it doesn't seem like we did.

Nicks was a tough call, is he the same player as he was three years ago? Then there were the attitude issues last year. I tend to trust Gettleman's NY sources on that. I get that one.
