arolina tight end Freddie Jones retired Sunday, ending his career just four months after signing a free-agent contract with the Panthers.

Jones, who played at North Carolina, spent eight seasons in San Diego and Arizona and had 404 catches during his career. He wasn't exactly a fit with the Panthers, who use their tight ends primarily for blocking.

"It was in the best interest of my family that I conclude my career at this time," Jones said in a statement. "I appreciate the Panthers signing me. It's a top-notch organization and I'm glad I got a chance to experience it before I retired."

What the fuck is going on? Is Carolina where elephants go to die? First Barry Foster, then Meadows now Jones. Oh well cap space opens up and we really were not counting on alot from him or position

That sucks. I'm just gullible enuff to hope that we were going to throw more to a tight end who could catch.

Didn't see this one coming...damn! One would think Gaines is letting out a big sigh of release with this news, but he may not have been that worried about it after all if it came to this for Freddie.

I think we were going to throw to the tight end more. To me, signing Jones amounted to an admission that they should have held on to Jermaine Wiggins. The offense missed that option last year, and Jones had better hands than Wiggins.

Seidman or Gaines may step up. We'll see. Mangum isn't a bad receiver. He just isn't the sort that teams have to take special measures to account for.
