Yet another example of how the whole franchise tag/transition tag idea is absolutely atrocious in theory, and completely bungled in practice. Thats the only position group that thats done for, right? Or do kickers/punters get put in the same bucket? If the Bears wanted to franchise Hester, could they do it as a specialist or would they have to pay him WR money? Just terrible legislation utterly lacking in foresight. If not completely kicked to the curb, it should be allowed for quarterbacks only.

I agree with the union's case, but it doesn't seem like it would matter unless the new CBA eliminates them. Assuming they still exist in the same or a similar incarnation, then you just apply them after the new agreement. As for Williams, I think we have to franchise him and then hope for something in a trade. I love the guy and have his jersey, but with Stewart and Goodson under contract it really doesn't make sense to break the bank to keep him around. Meanwhile I think they'll work out a deal with Kalil even though I wish they wouldn't, just because I don't think he's very well suited for our offense and I'm tired of sinking so much money into an offensive line that was really shitty last season.
