Franchising a kicker is not that unusual. As for Norwell; we had already botched that by making Turner and Matt Kalil two of the highest paid players at their positions. Believe it or not, this is actually Hurney showing a mild amount of good judgement.

 

Gano sucked in 2017. And by sucked, I mean he had the best PK season in franchise history.

 

I should re-word this. It's Hurney showing slightly less of the classical bad Hurney judgement that nearly bankrupted the organization.

2017: of the league’s top 10 FA spenders, 6 went to the playoffs. That includes the often largely mischaracterized Patriots. The cap hike since 2011 can and does reward aggressive spending on quality players who are well into their upper 20’s and beyond.

Fans sitting around checking the cap hourly like their own shitty checking accounts really are living in 2008. Go play with your kids.

 

I'd be fine with aggressive spending if we didn't have a bafoon of a GM who has a history of running up debt on useless crap.
