I won't say "I'd rather have him than Cowher", but I want to keep the defense we have. I want that over starting over with an ill-advised defense.

Fox needs to be back. I think the chances of getting a lesser coach than him should we make a change are much greater than the chance we upgrade.

Fox has been a great coach here. I hope he stays. If not, there are a couple of big name coaches that would keep me from being heart-broken if he leaves ... Cohwer not being one of them. I'd be really disappointed if we lose Fox for Cohwer ... would almost be as bad as firing Bum Phillips and replacing him with Ed Biles, then Chuck Studley, then Hugh Campbell (in order to lure Warren Moon) and then Jerry Glanville. Richardson is smarter than that, so I remain optimistic whatever the outcome.

An owner should only make a change if it is an upgrade.

When Fox took over as Head Coach, his only gaurantee was that the fans would be proud of the play on the field.

    Are we?

    and the rumors begin.............

Report links Fox to Browns' job
Though Panthers coach John Fox said last night he expects to be back next season, a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer today cites speculation linking Fox to the Browns' head coaching job if it becomes open.

New Browns president Mike Holmgren is weighing whether or not to retain Eric Mangini, whose team won its last four games to finish 5-11.

The story says Holmgren would be interested in a defensive-minded coach, such as Fox, and that Holmgren might have a hand in the offense.

That would be an interesting mesh. Fox is from the Chuck Noll school of coaching, relying heavily on defense and a strong running game. Holmgren is from the Bill Walsh school, employing a West Coast passing attack.

However, Holmgren also has had standout running backs in the past when he was a head coach, especially Shaun Alexander in Seattle.

The story also notes that Holmgren, Fox and Browns' general manager candidate Tom Heckert all are represented by the same agent, Bob LaMonte.

Fox has one year remaining on his contract. The Panthers declined to give him an extension, though his salary of around $6 million would make him one of the league's highest-paid coaches.

In order to go to another team, the Panthers would have to free Fox from the final year of his contract. That might require another team to give Carolina compensation, though the Panthers have the freedom to let him go without receiving anything in return.

I have a hard time buying that he's going to coach for Holmgren and then that Holmgren himself is going to have "a hand in the offense."
